Tuesday, September 1, 2015 – Assessment Practice

Tuesday, September 1, 2015 – Assessment Practice

Good morning, class.

Before we begin instruction, it is time to take away from it to practice for the state assessment tests. Yesterday you were to define the following new vocabulary words:

Beer o’clock

Wine o’clock

Fatberg

Butt dial

Cat café

cat cafe

Cat café in Denver. Nothing like a cat walking across the table where you are about to eat.

Today, you must use at least four of them in a single sentence. For example, “It was late into beer o’clock at the cat café when Sally realized she butt dialed her exboyfriend so she just called him a fatberg and hung up.”

Remember all of your hopes and dreams of the future depend on how well you do on assessment tests. In addition your school really wants a big “A” assigned to it to hang in front so the world can see. Of course we know in the new accreditation scheme the “A” stands for Affluent. Therefore it you attend schools such as Highland Park in Dallas or THE Woodlands HS in THE Woodlands, you will have no trouble.

And in what little time left for instruction, ensure you are aware of the following for the weekend.

Kyle Allen – named starting quarterback for The Fighting Texas Aggies – WHOOP!

Tyrone Swoops – named starting quarterback for THE University of Texas – come one Tyrone, you got this! It is just a mural with a painting of Touchdown Jesus on the wall of the library. Hook the Irish!

In addition to following the SEC and the Big 12, this year the schools of The Southland Conference are added to teams I like. This includes two alma maters of mine – Stephen F. Austin State – Go Jacks! Sam Houston State – Go Bearcats and Northwestern State University. Northwestern is located in the beautiful town, named after the brother of Nacogdoches, Natchitoches, Louisiana. It is the home of the birth of my sister; and the Northwestern team is coached by Darryl Daye – a second cousin, I wish I could meet.

Of course these will be on the assessment practices on Monday. Remember – assessment over instruction.

It did not begin with The Aggies. Until I was about ten years old I thought that that one graduated from high school and then went to LSU.

This is because my first football hero who actually got the beautiful girl too is my cousin, Donnie Daye  and his beautiful bride Penny. How many years? 50 at least and you two still look like you could throw the block for Billy Cannon against Ole Miss at Halloween and lead the Tiger Band on the field.

Donnie and Penny (800x677)

This is Donnie with some of the memorabilia. Donnie was #33 in 1958. When he moved to fullback and started with the White Team, he was #44. His junior year 1959, he led the team in tackles.

I have since added the following teams to My Favorites for these reasons:

Courtney – I wanted you to have a picture too. It was taken from Darryl K Royal Memorial Stadium. It is hard to be around them now that BU is #3, isn’t it? Hook ‘Em!

But it was The Fighting Texas Aggies who made the offer.

From The University of Texas – Welcome – pay here.

From Texas A&M – Howdy. Here is a loan from the Class of 1933, a teaching assistantship, then a research assistantship and a funded dissertation.

The 12th Man – not just about standing at the football games.

And last and of course, least – Texas Tech. See what happens when one doesn’t read Here’s What I’m Thinking, Little Sister.

Manziel Monday – July 13, 2015 – I Am Older and Have More Insurance Than You Do

Manziel Monday – July 13, 2015 – I Am Older and Have More Insurance Than You Do

Yes, I stood in line for almost two hours to get Johnny Manziel’s signature yesterday, Sunday, July 12, 2015.

Shaking Hands with Johnny Manziel - Copy (800x600) Me and Johnny Manziel - Copy (800x600)

I chose the white mini-helmet to have Johnny Manziel sign. The particulars of how I was able to obtain a ticket to the event, why I chose to obtain it and how much money I spent to obtain his signature plus the inscription of “Heisman 12” are another story. Today is the backstory of why I chose the white mini-helmet.

Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2015 – Confirmation of being a ticket holder for event on July 12. Eventually only 350 tickets were sold. Each item you wanted him to autograph required a ticket.  Large ticket items (full size helmets, footballs, posters) were $150.

Date: Thursday, July 3, 2015

Place: Aggieland Outfitters, College Station, Texas – AKA – Drive By Credit Card Amount Increases

Need: Something for Johnny Manziel to sign on the Johnny Manziel Resurrection Tour.

Conversation with clerk – aka 18 year female student:

Me:  I cannot decide which mini- helmet I want him to sign. I think I will go with the white one because that was  the one The Aggies wore when we defeated Alabama in 2012.

Clerk: Oh no. That was an away game, so it would have been the black one!

Me: Thoughts to self – Did you just tell me I was wrong? I am older, have more insurance and confident enough to bet any sheepskin on my wall that I am smarter than you. And I will forget more about Aggie football than you will ever know. I know where I was and who I was taking to on the phone (Ms. Navasota, T. McE) as the clock ran out (read: witness) when score was Texas A&M 29 and Alabama 23 in Tuscaloosa in 2012.

Me: I will take the white one.

A couple of shots. Gig ‘Em.

Really? If Alabama has nothing on the Aggies, what do you call those big glass football trophies with words like NCAA, Football, National and Championship all in one sentence?

Is there a mercy rule in Division I NCAA college football? Something along the lines of 59 – 0, perhaps?

I feel like a chihuahua in a room full of great danes, but counting the days until kickoff.

Monday, May 18, 2015 – Graduation, Family & Bikers

Monday, May 18, 2015 – Graduation, Family & Bikers

“What a wild, wacky weekend in Waco,” she said with alliteration. I stole today’s title from Great Niece Courtney’s tweet.  She is one of my new followers on Twitter. She joins several new FFs. (Facebook Friends). Fortunately and thankfully my trip to Waco only involved the first two descriptors.  What a tragedy. I bet the Waconians (?) thought Stephen King’s The Stand was taking place.

But for my new social media friends – Welcome to Here’s What I’m Thinking.  Here are my rules. They are always subject to change.

I write a post everyday Monday through Friday and maybe Saturday and/or Sunday if something happens to interest me. I try to post around late morning unless I play golf. If the rains ever cease and I can play golf again, postings will appear in the afternoons. Note: “around late morning” is from the bureaucratic time zone – the one used by state and federal agencies.

I write mostly about college football (and a few other sports), the Texas educational institution, politics and anything else my great mind thinks about.  Just because it appears to be sports oriented does not always mean it is about sporting event, itself. I say this for the Sports Challenged who do not follow sports.  I may critique and rank the college football uniforms for that Saturday. For example from last fall “Is it just me or do the Texas Tech football helmets look like the Dairy Queen logo?”

Topics range from snarky to moving.  Remember my sister reads this daily.  So try to refrain from using the F word too often. My family only tends to use it around her when there is a bear chasing one of us in Alaska.

To get people to read what I write I created this mission statement – aka my business plan.

If I have known you in the past, know you now or will know you in the future, I WILL write about you.  There is a high statistical probability that what I write about you will be positive.  But are you willing to risk that you fall outside the standard deviation and are written in a negative light and not read Here’s What I’m Thinking?  Those who do not read, will be written about.

The intent is to make at least one person think and/or laugh daily.  I am not responsible if coffee, red wine or any other substance hits your computer screen while laughing or crying.

I try to be bipartisan snarky, but the political writings do lean left and tend to be more blue oriented than red.  And sorry, Greg, Courtney, Principal Judy, et al, they lean far to the Maroon and White rather than the burnt orange.  I anxiously await your snappy comebacks.

Jennifer, check out some previous posts with me and Reveille VIII or the implosion of the West Side.  Yes, me and 7000, at 6:30 AM on a Sunday morning to watch a wall full of memories fall.  Why? Because we are the Aggies. That and money and better ESPN angles for football games. It is amazing what a Heisman Trophy will bring, isn’t it Baylor? And we get to play on real TV. (Paraphrase to Chancellor John Sharp), but I understand The University is booked until 2027.

Remember, you do not have to like anything I am thinking.  The goal of a writer is to evoke emotions. (A big shout out to Mrs. Traugh and Mrs. Burnside for teaching me that in high school and I did not split my infinitive either.)

Comments are most welcome even if you have a different point of view or perspective.  It is a diverse world.  Remember the site is called Here’s What I’m Thinking, not Here’s What I Believe.  Often the postings are parodies or satires.  It is written on multiple levels with multiple items embedded.

You can access the site by going to Drdrd85.me and one does not have to go through social media (i.e. Facebook or Twitter).

Originally, the site was modeled after the vanity cards, at the end of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady productions.  Many are aware my favorite TV show that is not on ESPN is The Big Bang Theory. The vanity cards are the paragraphical writings on the cards that flash at the end of the program.  Mine were supposed to be “bathroom” in length, meaning one should be able to read what I writing during an ordinary visit to the bathroom or about 500 words. But sometimes I become verbose. But hey, I have a PhD. That is how we talk – long and boring – just like I did now.

Anyway, hopefully there is a little something for everyone.   Thanks for reading.

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 – No Golf Today

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 – No Golf Today

No golf today. As my dear HB used to say “there is always lots to be thankful for.”  I will be so thankful if the rains wash away the stain in my driveway.  See – my friend came to spend a few days with me over the weekend and something leaked from her truck which was parked in my driveway creating a grease stain.  Remember I live in a group of all look a-like town homes.

After she left I went outside to look at the stain hoping to see the face of Jesus or Mary or maybe even Reveille. Maybe even something prophetic such as “Texas Aggie Women Upset UConn to win the 2015 National Women’s Basketball Championship.  Or something even more profound “Texas Aggies Win Their First National Football Championship since 1939!” This way I could turn my town home into a shrine of some sort and charge admission for people to drive by and take photos, but I couldn’t see any faces, messages from the future or oily images suitable for Instagram.

So I will be so thankful if these rains wash away the stain.  Otherwise directions to my house will include, “Turn right and then my house is the one with the giant penis looking stain in the driveway. You can’t miss it.”

Oh yes – another thing to be thankful for – I did not put cat litter on the stain yesterday.  For that to work on grease stains it must be “the clumping kind.” Can you imagine if my driveway was filled with clumping cat litter and it rained causing it to all clump at the end of my driveway?

Thursday, March 12, 2015 – Reveille Training

Thursday, March 12, 2015 – Reveille Training

Yes, Reveille IX is a beauty.  I saw in another article that Reveille VIII would be training her.  VKM, I hope you got the contract to create the training modules for the new Rev.  Just exactly how does one dog train another? Are these the key concepts?

No one walks on the grass around the Memorial Student Center because it is in memory of our fallen heroes.

Never pee on Kyle Field. It too is sacred.

When at a visitor’s site, always pee on their field.

Insist on a new wardrobe, including a new coat, a new bed and new raincoat.

Always sleep on your handler’s bunk.  He must sleep on the floor.

Learn when your handler has an exam, and then bark in class so the class will be dismissed.

Only bark at opponents’ mascots you can outrun.  Never bark at those for which you could be an afternoon snack– (Tigers and Alligators.)

During football games, run as fast as you can when leading in the team.  There is an army of big and fast men running behind you.

Never fear – your handler will throw his body on you to protect you from harm and SMU football players.

Never fear – should a team make fun of you (the Rice University MOB), the entire Corp of Cadets will hold the opponent hostage until the Texas Rangers arrive.

Never roll in the mud or in dead carcasses unless the Aggies win the National Football Championship. Then all Aggies will join you in the celebration.

Don’t send email from your personal account.  You are now a public official.

Tuesday, February 3, 2015  –  Got History?

Well, how do you like the new blog design?

I took the photo that is the banner on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 2:00 PM. It is untouched. The image in that photograph will never be seen again. The West Side of Kyle Field was imploded on Sunday, December 21, 2014.

A photograph taken next December 14 will show the new West Side of Kyle Field. Think about it.  I just took a photograph of history.

Thursday, January 29, 2015 – Kyler Murray – Come to Texas A&M

Thursday, January 29, 2015 – Kyler Murray – Come to Texas A&M

Kyler Murray may be one of the best athletes in the state of Texas or maybe in all of college football.

The Dallas Morning News listed five reasons why Kyler Murray should choose Texas A&M over that other school in Austin. You can read the entire article from Brandon Wheeland, but if you just want my cliff note version, here are my reasons why Kyler Murray should attend Texas A&M.

  • Less traffic in Bryan/College Station
  • The Texas Legislature is not here
  • Maroon is a better color than burnt orange
  • The Aggies will have a new Reveille
  • The SEC Network is better than The Longhorn Network
  • The SEC is stronger than the Big 12 Conference and the Big 12 really only has 10 schools
  • Do not have to go to Lubbock and play Texas Tech and have tortillas thrown at you
  • No conference championship game in the Big 12
  • There is room in the trophy case for another Heisman trophy
  • There are thousands of Former Students who long for a National Championship in football.

Here are five reasons that Murray should choose A&M over Texas. http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2015/01/five-reasons-kyler-murray-should-choose-texas-am.html/

Legacy – Kyler’s father, Kevin, played QB for Texas A&M from 1983-1986, re-writing the record books along the way. In 1986, he rallied the Aggies to a 31-30 victory after falling behind Baylor 17-0 in the contest Texas Football Magazine later voted the best game of the decade.

To follow in his father’s footsteps and play at A&M would be another milestone in the promising career of Murray. After committing in May of 2014, holding true to his verbal despite all of the outside noise would look great for him.

Murray will succeed at whatever university lands his services, but only A&M can offer the opportunity to launch touchdown passes into the end zone for the same school as his father once did years ago.

Baseball – Haven’t you heard? He plays baseball too.

Murray will be a two-sport athlete whether he chooses Texas or Texas A&M, that much has been decided. He became the first athlete to ever be named an Under Armour All-American in both baseball and football.

Both schools have great programs, so it really is a push in this category. Head coach Rob Childress is in his 10th season with Texas A&M with NCAA regional games a regular occurrence.

That being said, baseball is more of a threat than a bonus when it comes to the services of Murray. The outfielder has a strong shot at going in the first round which could spell disaster for both universities come June if he chooses to turn pro in baseball.

If college ultimately wins out, a combination of newly-renovated Kyle Field and Blue Bell Park at Olsen Field playing host to your athletic abilities is hard to turn down.

Interest in the person more than the player – Lots of promises are thrown out towards the end of January in college football. The most notable rumor during the Murray recruitment as of late is that head coach Charlie Strong has promised him the starting spot at quarterback if he ultimately chooses Texas.

If Sumlin has made this same promise to Murray, it hasn’t leaked yet. He has however been all in on Murray since the start, and isn’t attempting to use all of Murray’s buddies as an incentive to swing the QB to the degree Texas has done.

Murray has the talent to start in college. That much goes without saying. At Texas, it appears it will be handed to him. As for A&M, he will have to earn that opportunity with his play, not his name.

In short, A&M offers Murray the ability to truly develop his game. The Aggies have a pretty strong success record with freshman QB’s over the past few years and there is no reason to believe that won’t continue. The important thing to remember is that should be a decision made by the head coach when a player is ready, not used as an incentive to possibly lure a young QB into a situation that may not be the best for him long term.

SEC. SEC. SEC. SEC. – Call it biased if you wish, but there’s a reason ESPN can’t stop talking about the Southeastern conference.

If the goal for Murray is the NFL, Texas A&M is the school to choose. The exposure of the SEC combined with playing in a newly-renovated $485 million stadium on national television week after week can boost your exposure rather quickly.

Not to mention, the conference championship game provided by the SEC is another luxury the Big 12 can’t provide. As seen recently, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee looks highly upon championship games.

If Murray wants to feed his habit of postseason play, the SEC is the conference to choose.

Johnny Who? – It’s an interesting concept to think about. How many players arrive to college with so much hype they draw comparisons to the greats before they even step foot on a field?

Murray is often referred to as “Manziel 2.0″ on various message boards, but with a higher ceiling.

With new defensive coordinator John Chavis joining Texas A&M, the days of needing to score 40 points to win a game will likely be a thing of the past. During his time at A&M, it’s completely realistic to see this team make multiple playoff runs with Murray at the helm. If that ends up being the case, the Heisman Trophy may be heading back to College Station sooner than expected.

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 – And The Winners Are?

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 – And The Winners Are?

“I Am Born.” That is the title of chapter one of what novel? Extra credit if you know the author.

Before I get to my last college football awards until next season, there is one more birthday to celebrate. MINE. Four score and seven years ago… No wait. That is The Gettysburg Address.  Three score and six years ago, I was born on this day.  That makes me 36, right?

Today marks the beginning of the 84th Texas Legislative session or as we referred to it – The Silly Season. Great niece Twin 2 begins her job as an assistant clerk with the Senate Transportation Committee.  I sent her a tweet that says “Good luck. Observe. Learn. And keep your voter registration card current.” Do I miss being a bureaucrat during session? I do miss the excitement, but I do not miss the long, grueling hours and the frustration. But I must say when I saw the email “First Reading” that begins the tracking of bills, my heart did flutter a bit. But I shall try to channel in the great, gone too soon, Molly Ivins and write about the session. Just a preview – today, at the opening session, armed gun activists are expected to gather outside the capitol.

And now – May I have the envelope please?

My award winners for the inaugural college football playoff are:

First runner-up award goes to Oregon. Duck Duck Sink. In the event the first place winner is unable to full her duties, (like some antiquated NCAA eligibility rule will surface) will Oregon get to be the National Champion?

And the 2015 National Champion of NCAA, college football, Division I is THE Ohio State University. What a way to dot that “I.” This in spite of the fact the flag bearers misspelled OHIO by forgetting the second “O” before the game began.

I had a three-way tie for most valuable players. While running back Ezekiel Elliot had a game of biblical proportions and safety Tyvis Powell led the team with nine tackles, my Most Valuable Player Award goes to Twelve Gauge, Cardale Jones. Did you see the arm on that guy?  There is a reason his teammates call him twelve-gauge like a shotgun. That and the fact he is huge and fast and extremely mobile. And he was the THIRD string QB?

Congratulations to The Ohio State University, but I still do not know what those little stickers on your helmets are. Nevertheless, everybody should have a helmet filled with them for a job well done. And you did it through hard work, facing epic obstacles and never, never gave up or quit believing in yourselves. Well done, gentlemen.

But now for the true winner$ of the fir$t college playoff$ $erie$:

  • AT&T
  • ESPN
  • NIKE and
  • Dr. Pepper aka Larry Culpepper.

Larry, will we see you ad nauseum during March Madness?

Parting shots – I see where Texas A&M has released quarterback Kenny Hill to explore his options.  Rumor has TCU in the mix.  Good luck, Kenny. I am sure there are flower beds in front of bars and restaurants in Fort Worth.  As the Aggies say, “Highway 6 runs both ways” meaning “if you can’t cut it at Texas A&M, go somewhere else.”

And to Johnny Football – You had that name trademarked or copyrighted. Do you plan to have Johnny Screw Up trademarked or copyrighted too? Get it together, Johnny! The partying is over, until you can take the Browns to a descent NFL season.

And to Kyle Allen, who tweeted “I want that feeling” – Fighting Texas Aggies everywhere want the feeling of a national championship too.  Take us there. BTHO – Arizona State, September 5, 2015

Chapter One from Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield (not the magician) is titled “I Am Born.”
