What is a group of turtles called?

What caption would you write for this photo? Mine is: Hole # 14 – “Did My Tee Shot Go In the Water Again?”

Check out this, Kristen. I was in the car with Ms. Navasota the other day and saw this. A CAT Folder. Next time I ride with her, I am going to open it and pick a cat from a folder.

These two are from the Ferrell Center at Baylor. This is why the opposing stand appear to be in a Subway commercial. THE University of Texas women played Baylor for first place in the Big 12 Conference. The coach “discussing” the game with the referring staff is the great Tina Thompson. Her presence on Head Coach Karen Aston’s staff is already taking THE University to the next level in women’s basketball.

I so love the look on the referee’s face. Those of us that recognize him know that he graduated last in his class from the Stevie Wonder School for Referring.

What is a group of turtles called? A group of turtles is called a bale.

Thursday, January 19, 2017 – Get a Cause Because. Happy Birthday, Dolly Parton!

Thursday, January 19, 2017 – Get a Cause Because. Happy Birthday, Dolly Parton!

Here’s what I’m thinking today. You should get a cause and support it in the best ways you can. Two of my causes are We Back Pat and Still Magnolias.

Thank you Algers, for being in Tennessee the day it after Coach Summitt's announcement and buying me this shirt.

Thank you Algers, for being in Tennessee the day it after Coach Summitt’s announcement and buying me this shirt.

We Back Pat honors the legendary Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summitt. This week SEC women’s basketball teams honor Coach Summitt with all teams wearing We Back Pat shirts. This week also announces the opening of the Pat Summitt Foundation. Please join me in this cause to find treatment and more importantly a cure for Alzheimers. http://patsummitt.org/

If you can’t find a cause you like, then start one you do like. Let’s hear for the Still Magnolias!!! It all starts with an idea. The Still Magnolias started with “wouldn’t it be nice if we could do something for our high school and 50th year of graduation?”

Because of your faith in us and your generosity and with the help of the Magnolia Independent School District and the Magnolia Education Foundation, The Still Magnolias were able to award two academic scholarships to Magnolia High School graduating seniors AND to start a program at MHS to provide assistance to current students. We named the program The Molly Memorial although the name could have been any classmate. This year we want to do more to help make the world a better place for those MHS students who now walk the hallways with the same Bulldog tenacity and spirit we once did. It is a chance to honor and/or remember someone who made a difference in your life in Magnolia, Texas by influencing others.

There are many ways you can get involved. When scholarship applications arrive this spring, we will need reviewers. Last year Still Magnolias were the only group who also awarded T-shirts to the kids’ chosen college. They loved it! We are always looking for ideas, directions, thoughts and most of all prayers.

Of course the bottom line always comes down to money. If you have a few spare dollars or that change in the jar, please consider donating to The Molly Memorial. Message me for submission and tax deductible forms.

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 – Golf, Gary and the 2011 National Championship

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 – Golf, Gary and the 2011 National Championship

Yu So Yung showed up to play golf today. While my team did not win the scramble, we played well. With 35 mile per hour wind gusts it was definitely hit and hope. FYI – JP, Homecoming Queen 1 – I am loving the new putter I got from you. Next margarita is on me.

In 2011 the Texas Aggie Women’s Basketball team won the NCAA National Championship. So far, it is the biggest win in basketball history at Texas A&M University. I believe the previous game was the “clock controversy” game sending Texas A&M into the championship game and sending Baylor Coach Mulkey into fits of rage and the bus back to Waco. What team did Texas A&M beat for the National Title?

The coach of the 2011 team and the current Aggies women’s basketball team is Gary Blair – GB as the team calls him. In his new book A Coaching Life, he gives us some favorite memories with his beautiful wit, grace and humility.

Yesterday when he was signing my book “To Delia, Gig ‘Em and thanks for the support of the Class of ’85” I told him, “You could have named the book, It’s a Long Way from South Oak Cliff in Dallas or from Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.” He looked at me and said “What great learning experiences. Loved them both.”

Those of us who play or have played sports realize it parallels life. There are wins. There are losses. But each time one must be open to what both have to teach us.

Thank you Coach Blair for signing my book and signing a book for Niece #1. He was even nice enough to put “Sic ‘Em Bears” on the page. Then of course he wrote “Gig ‘Em Aggies” beneath it. I supposed he has forgotten about the clock incident. Nevertheless I do not think I will place his signed book next to my signed copy of Baylor Coach Kim Mulkey’s book – Never Back Down. I do not think she has forgotten the clock.

Oh who did the Texas Aggies beat to win the 2011 Women’s National Championship? Same team Baylor women beat to win the 2012 Women’s National Championship – Notre Dame and Miss Muffet.

Since then the women’s national championship has been won by some team in New England with an Italian as the coach and dog as the mascot.

A Coaching Life by Gary Blair with Rusty Burson is available from Texas A&M University Press and available in the book store in the Memorial Student Center. It will soon be available on Amazon.

Tuesday, January 3, 2017 – No More Football? But Here Comes the Silly Season!

Tuesday, January 3, 2017 – No More Football? But Here Comes the Silly Season!

I regret to inform you that there are only 60 minutes of college football left until next season. That means round ball. Geno A., please tell me you are not trying to grow facial hair. On old men like you, it just looks as though you forgot to shave. If you try that man bun thing, I will somehow find a way to like you even less.

Dear God, how many Hail Mary’s do I have to say when yesterday I said “Oh crap, when is Ash Wednesday and Lent?” Perhaps I should give up cussing. It is March 1 to go along with March Madness. Can I give up college football games? No? How about snow skiing? No, I do not ski, but I could learn and then give it up before Lent. Ok, if You say so, I will go think about it on the golf course before You send the Arctic Blast tomorrow.

Before I go to enjoy this beautiful day, here’s to the public servants doing the good for the state of Texas. The Silly Season begins and Texas Legislature is under the Dome once again. This could be the year we all learn where we can go pee in the proper potty and where else we can carry our handgun. Of course, if we are firing into the air during New Year’s Eve celebrations and a stray bullet just happens to hit a legislator, celebratory handgun discharge could go up in smoke.

Here’s to those of us retired public servants saying “Thank you ERS that I am not there!” Carry on, regardless!20130701_121153

Monday, January 2, 2017 – Monday Monday Can’t Trust That Day.

Monday, January 2, 2017 – Monday Monday Can’t Trust That Day.

I bet you can’t listen to The Mamas and the Papas without singing along. And you try singing in harmony. Don’t tell me you don’t because I know you do. I try to sing all parts at the same time as loud as Mama Cass could. Let’s turn up the radio so we can sing over it.

It is the first Monday of a brand new year. I am now entering year three of Here’s What I’m Thinking. For new readers I feel we must review.

I write this blog called Here’s What I’m Thinking (HWIT). I took the title from Dr. Pencil Nose. When asked in meetings what he thought, he always said “Here’s what I’m thinking,” with a #2 pencil stuck up his nose.

# 2 Pencils (800x554)

The purpose of HWIT is to make at least one person laugh or think. I am changing this for 2017 to “make many people laugh or think.”

My strategy to encourage readers is this: If I have known you in this past or know you know now, I WILL write about you. You must hope that I write flattering words about you with your name disguised (RL, Dr. Pencil Nose, MENSA DeMarsian, Ms. Navasota, Killer Queen, Homecoming Queens 1 and 2, SPQ etc.) Otherwise I put the coordinates to your house on Facebook with privacy setting to Public.

Monday through Friday and sometimes on Saturday and Sunday, I write about whatever I am thinking. I like to think. It involves a fair amount of sitting. See photo of a good place to sit and think – also good for playing cards and dominos and other assorted activities. Furthermore I used to get paid big bucks to so I am experienced in the field of thinking. I even have a flat hat with strings on the side and a nightgown and letters after my name to show for it.Campus tour 7.5.2014 2014-07-05 098 (800x600)

Now I like to think about college football and basketball with a few spring sports thrown in until football season begins. I write about teams I like and teams that play teams I like. This means the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin, the Bearkats of Sam Houston and of course, the Fighting Texas Aggies.Me and Tailgating

I am a Native Born Texan who has kissed Willie Nelson and have papers to prove it. I write about Texas.

By God I’ll die here with my boots on! More likely it will golf shoes or tennis shoes, but I’m not leaving Texas.

I am a recovering bureaucrat. I write about politics.

You do not have to like it what I write. “I disagree with almost everything you write, but it is so funny the way you say it.” CSE – 1.13 coming soon!

Over Ninety-five percent (95%) of HWIT is my work – my thoughts and my photographs. The artsy craftsy readers and the very early morning Facebookers like the strange photos. If I post something that is not my original work, I try to give credit – for example: Borrowed from the Internet.

More often than not, there is a zinger at the end. For example, did you know that I Call Your Name sung by The Mamas and Papas was written by John Lennon? Let’s sing the chorus with a heavy on the Doot. Doot. Doots Doots in backup vocals.

Don’t you know I can’t take it!

I don’t know who can

I’m not gonna makeeee it

I’m not that kind of man

Don’t you know I can’t sleep at night (Hit the high note!)

But just the same

I never weep at night

I call your name! YEAH!!!

You tried to sing harmony with yourself, didn’t you? Told you not to trust this day.

Wednesday, December 28, 2016 – Winding Down and The Empty Jar

Wednesday, December 28, 2016 – Winding Down and The Empty Jar

The year 2016 thankfully is almost over. To quote from The Dead, “What a long strange trip it’s been.” With President Twitter about to take office, we do not know what 2017 brings. However, we must have faith and expectations of hope and promise. Here is a simple way to remember good things that will happen in 2017.

Several family members received a large empty glass container as a gift. With the containers there was a ball point pen and stacks of post it notes. On a simple index card I wrote “This is a 2017 Happiness and Blessings Jar. Whenever something makes you happy or you feel blessed, jot it down on a note and place in the jar. On December 31, 2017, take out the scraps of paper and recall how blessed you were during the year.” Then I tied the index card to the jar with a ribbon.

I am going to start my Happiness and Blessing Jar this evening when first – The Texas Aggie Women’s Basketball team defeats Prairie View A&M. This will be followed when the Texas Aggies BTHO Kansas State tonight in Texas Bowl.

Wednesday, November 30, 2016 – Aggie Ball

Wednesday, November 30, 2016 – Aggie Ball

It was elementary day at the Texas Aggie women’s game against USC. There were over 4000 screaming and hollering full of energy, towel waving baby Aggies.

Season tickets holders were moved from their regular seats to other seats. They also fed ticket holders breakfast. I would say I landed a pretty good seat – sweat slinging close. The only thing separating me from the team was the railing.

usc-game-11-30-16

The player on the left is Anriel Howard – aka Lashes.lashes3

Look closely just below the other player’s ear lobe. Those are Howard’s natural lashes. When she puts on the glam ones her lashes look like butterflies. She is such a great athlete and a beautiful and talented young lady. The one blowing the bubble, Danni Williams, Miss 3 Point Shooter, is no slouch either.

But alas, the former Queen of the Houston Comets, basketball coach extraordinare Cynthia Cooper-Dykes and her USC Trojans proved victorious, in a great game.

Friday, November 4, 2016 – The Friday Football Snark – Who’s In?

Friday, November 4, 2016 – The Friday Football Snark – Who’s In?

The College Football Selection Committee announced on Tuesday, “Who’s In?” These are the four football teams that would match up for a national championship if the season ended on Tuesday. But the season did not end on Tuesday. Nor will it end on Saturday, but the Who’s In can change.

Before we see Who’s In, let’s begin with Who’s UP and Who are you?

Who is (are) the Idiots of Sports Programming who schedule football games at 11:00 am in the morning?

Moving along to Who’s Out? – These are the teams currently deemed out of contention for a National Championship in college football. However, one or two may go to a nice bowl game while the remaining will play in lesser bowl games in prime vacation spots like Shreveport, Louisiana. Well, you can go to the casinos.

From the Who’s Out from the Small 12 Conference:

Falling backwards to yesterday, OU defeated Iowa State 34 to 24. Do not forget to “fall back” and set your clocks back this weekend.

Coming to you live from Lubbock, Texas at the unholy hour of 11:00 am on FS 1 THE University of Texas plays Tortilla Tech. Flying breakfast tacos. Tech (800x600)

This should be an offensive delight. Hook ‘Em Hippies!

At the reasonable hour of 2:30 FOX brings us Baylor and TCU. This would have been more exciting if last weekend had not happened to both teams.

On ABC @ 2:30 the Cowboys of Oklahoma State play the Wildkats of Kansas State. FYI, Ms. Navasota – Bill Snyder is alive. Love you, Pistol Pete!

Who’s In? And Who Could Be In?

Surprising all of football and delighting all of Aggieland, the #4 Texas A&M Aggies play the Mississippi State Bulldogs. This is at the ridiculous hour of 11:00 AM on the “you must pay for it with your cable” the SECN. One game at a time Aggies! Vote for Conner McQueen for President! Trevor Knight for VP. Platform: “Gig ‘Em!”

Following the Aggies on ESPN @ 2:30 the Terrapins of Maryland play #3 Michigan. Please, oh please – The Turtle and the Hare! Maryland, My Maryland!

At the same time (2:30) on ABC in the Game of Orange we have Syracuse and # 2 Clemson. Go Round Orange Thing!

Otto the Orange

At 5:00 we have an Aggie Women’s Basketball Exhibition Game with Oklahoma City University @ Reed Arena. Go Lashes! No TV, but most of the season is on SEC.

Lashes 2 (800x450)

Returning home just in time for an evening of excitement:

On ABC at 7:00 Nebraska plays # 6 OHIO State. Go Huskers. Nobody likes nuts in their cornbread and Ohio uses plain bread to make dressing. Dreadful!

But rocking Baton Rouge at 7:00 PM on CBS the # 1 Alabama Tide rolls into Death Valley to meet the Tigers of LSU. So sorry dear Tide friends – but I gotta go with family on this one! Tiger Boogie! GEAUX Tigers!

And should you still be awake at 9:30 the # 5 Washington Huskies play the Bears of Cal  on ESPN. Go BEARS!Beer Bear

It is another fun filled weekend of sports so let’s get started. The Aggies of Texas A&M are playing the Aggies of New Mexico at 6:30 on ESPNU in The Aggie Cupcake Bowl.

Fifteen minutes prior to Aggie Cupcake kick off on the SEC Network the Auburn Tigers go against the Rebels of Ole Miss. A victory over the Rebels would be most appreciated in Aggieland.

Other cupcake action has Texas Southern playing the #1 CFB Sam Houston Bearkats on ESPN3. This could be the Bearkats year to be #1.

The Game of Interest is THE University of Texas hosting the Baylor Bears on ABC at 2:30. This game is interesting for many reasons and not all of them are good.

And in the evening at 7:00 PM Game Two of the we have the history making World Series between the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs on Fox. GO CUBS! I do not believe I have ever seen so much winter gear worn during a baseball game.

Here are some pics from last evening’s Maroon Madness tipping off the start of basketball season. Be sure to read my comments- especially you, RL.
