Tuesday, April 12, 2016 – ICYMI – In Case You Missed It.

While we anxiously await the results of tonight’s reality show live from New York – The United States Presidential Elections – let’s take a look at what you missed in other news.

First News from the Royal Families:

From India: Did you see Kate Middleton playing cricket in those high heels? You go, Girl!

From the Brazos Valley: Make that Sir Quarterback. His Royal Highness and his peeps appointed Trevor Knight as starting quarterback for the 2016 Texas Aggie Football Season.

Panoramic view (800x284)

Knight was named MVP of the 2014 Sugar Bowl when he led Oklahoma to a 45–31 upset of two-time reigning national champion Alabama.

From Golf: Jordon Spieth – I think it would have been pretty funny too if you had dropped The Green Jacket twice as you put it on this year’s champion – what is his name again?

From DWTS: Looking good as Prince Charming, last night, Von Miller.

Second News from the Weird and Strange and Just Downright Awful

Johnny Manziel is my new roommate. He is staying and paying until he makes up for the dollars I spent on buying his shit.

From the land of “Take me back to Dixie” come the ghosts of George Wallace and Jesse Helms – Alabama, and North Carolina – we have the reincarnation of the current governors of Mississippi and North Carolina.

From these backwards thinking minds comes legislation regarding who can pee where. When did one’s need to pee become a need to legislate? Please use the bathroom with the urinary disposal system you were born with? How in the hell are you going to enforce this? I am not buying this shit either.

Third News from World of The Let’s Make a Deal

The “good money” Proposal

From some faithful and loyal readers of HWIT, I received the following proposal yesterday:

“BTW – we would pay good money to see a video of you throwing your clubs in the water, jumping in after them, thrashing wildly while screaming and cursing just sayin.”

Here is my Counter Proposal – Pick a definition of “good money” and bring it!

  • Must be at the 12th Hole in Augusta at The Masters – you pay for my trip to The Masters and my videographers
  • The purse Jordon Speith received
  • New clubs after mine are in the water
  • A tailgate weekend at my house when Johnny Manziel moves out.

Tuesday, March 29, 2016 – And Then There Were Four – As in Four for UConn

Tuesday, March 29, 2016 – And Then There Were Four – As in Four for UConn

And then there were four teams from the Women’s basketball NCAA Division I. And Then There were four teams on the Men’s basketball NCAA division I. Then there were none – None of the teams of either gender that I care about.

Headed to Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis, Indiana for the UConn Invitational will Geno and the Giants, the Beavers of Oregon State, the Huskies of Washington (Dub is actually an Alaskan Malamute) and the Orange Fluff Ball from Syracuse. Otto the Orange

Should have used last year’s bracket.W Bracket

Headed to the men’s Final Four in Houston are Oklahoma, University of North Carolina, Villanova and the Orange Fluff Ball from Syracuse. FYI  – The Orange Fluff Ball is named – Otto the Orange.

Headed to assist the Baylor softball and baseball teams to assist the pitching coaches will Kim Mulkey. For the sports challenged – in an act of frustration during last evenings Baylor/Oregon State game, Baylor women’s coach Kim Mulkey threw her most beautiful and very expensive gold jacket a good thirty yards in an act of frustration. Next year, Coach Mulkey, since you know going to receive a Technical foul anyway, throw your jacket at the referees. (NCAA Rule Violation Section IX, Paragraph 6, Part B, Sentence one – Jacket Throwing). Apparently the only three people in the arena and across ESPN who did not see the Oregon State player hold on to the Baylor player for good 1.4 seconds were the three referees standing within three feet.

March 24, 2016 – Holy Week and I Think Jesus Would Have Played Sports

March 24, 2016 – Holy Week and I Think Jesus Would Have Played Sports

I think Jesus probably would have played sports. Of course the only sport of the day was having the Christians eaten by lions and other forms of torture and He was not into that until the end. Thank God. He did seem to enjoy fishing.

I think He would have played soccer, baseball and golf and all other sports. Why those three? Not only are those thinking sports, they are sports known for their diplomacy and etiquette and breaking social and political norms and rules across all geopolitical barriers.

He was good at basketball too – of course He could play all five positions, but is best at point guard. He already had a team – The Disciples.

Of course He would have played football. In Texas football is a religion. I think He would be #1 high school QB, then #1 college QB, and then first round draft choice, and then #1 in the NFL.

But back to Holy Week. For all of us whose religious beliefs go back to The Kneeling Faiths, it is Maundy Thursday. Thus begins The Easter Vigils when Christians celebrate The Last Supper, the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ.

So tonight begins my Easter Vigil. Of course there will be wine and candles and prayers offered. My Easter Vigil begins at 6:37 CST and not one minute SOONER!

BTHO OU!!!

Isn’t this a Sooner Schooner?

So here’s to Jesus and The Disciples and The Fighting Texas Aggies Men’s basketball team. Both are great at come backs!

George S. Patton Jr. — ‘Give me an Army of West Point graduates and I’ll win a battle… Give me a handful of Texas Aggies and I’ll win a war.’

The Brazos Valley and Texas A&M University are taking full credit for yesterday’s win by the Denver Broncos. This includes congratulations to Head Coach Gary Kubiak, Class of 83 (I think) and to the first Texas Aggie to be selected as Most Valuable Player in a Super Bowl – Outside linebacker, Von Miller, from DeSoto, Texas. (NOTE: NOT DALLAS!)

Further congratulations go to Peyton Manning and the entire Denver organization – especially the lady with the Botox lips at the trophy presentation. I think she is the owner.

Gig ‘Em Broncos.

Thursday, January 28, 2016 – We Are the Aggies! The Aggies are WE!

Trivia – Where did Denver Broncos Head Coach Gary Kubiak graduate from high school? Where did Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller graduate from high school?

Love you, Cam! Good Luck, Carolina! Sorry Phillip! But did you really think I was NOT going to stand with the Former Students of Texas A&M University? Gary Kubiak was the quarterback for The Fighting Texas Aggies when I stood in the boiling afternoon sun on the east side in Kyle Field in the 1980’s. And how about Consensus All American in 2009 and in 2010 Texas A&M linebacker, Von Miller? We have breathed the air of Kyle Field and Aggieland.

Here is a Horse Laugh to the uniformed sports reporter who referred to them as “Former Aggies.” There is no such thing as a Former Aggie. We are known as Former Students and we are ALWAYS a Texas Aggie. It probably has something to do with breathing the air of Kyle Field and Aggieland.

So Here’s to the Denver Broncos

and

BTHO Carolina in Super Bowl 50!

Trivia answers: Gary Kubiak graduated from St. Pius X in Houston, Texas in 1978.

Von Miller graduated from DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas in 2007.

Wednesday, January 27, 2016 – The Cam Newton Effect – Besides Being Really Hot Looking and an Outstanding Football Player

Wednesday, January 27, 2016 – The Cam Newton Effect – Besides Being Really Hot Looking and an Outstanding Football Player

The Brazos Valley is abuzz over the Cam Newton Effect. Thirty miles down the road a piece from Bryan is Brenham Texas – Home of Blinn College. Blinn still feels the effects of when Cam Newton played quarterback there. He led the 2009 Blinn Buccaneers to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Football Championship.

On February 7, 2016, he will lead his team, the Carolina Panthers, in the 50th Anniversary of the NFL Super Bowl. He seems to have done well between Blinn and Carolina too. Let’s see – a Heisman Trophy, a 2011 National Football Championship for Auburn (Auburn 22 – Oregon 19) and a Bachelor’s Degree in May 2015. Note: his degree is in Sociology – me and Cam!

http://www.people.com/article/cam-newton-graduates-from-college-gets-new-contract

Here is a screen shot of my TV on Monday, January 25 showing the Bryan KAGS news reporter sitting where Cam Newton sat in his English class at Blinn.

KAGS Reporter Cam Newton Desk (800x450)

In her interview here is what his English teacher said about him:

  • It was a Monday, Wednesday, Friday class at 8:00 AM.
  • He always had that great big smile.
  • He was never absent.
  • He was never late.
  • He worked as hard in the classroom as he did on the field.

The Cam Newton effect extends far beyond football and a small college in Texas. It is about working hard to achieve your dreams, keeping your promise to your Mama about getting that sheepskin, always doing your best and thinking about others. Note: Cam Newton chose not to walk at Auburn graduation ceremonies because he did not want to distract from others’ graduation.

I am currently unaware of plans for a plaque marking the seat with Cam Newton Sat Here, but I would support it if there are plans.

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 – Chris Christie: ‘I will throw my body in front of the Johnny Manziel train.’

Shaking Hands with Johnny Manziel - Copy (800x600)

Johnny Manziel – touching my Aggie Ring! Aggieland Outfitters, College Station, Texas, 2014.

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 – Chris Christie: ‘I will throw my body in front of the Johnny Manziel train!

The Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie said he would sacrifice his body if Johnny Manziel goes to the Dallas Cowboys. Wow! What a great idea. Not that you would die if you literally threw your body on the tracks Governor Christi, but the combination of the National Football League and politics. Why not? Neither cannot possibly get any crazier, can they?

If politicians would throw their bodies under the bus, train, car based on the decisions regarding sports figures to exit the Presidential race, this would cost so much less than debates and caucuses and even elections.

So who are the favorite players of Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Hillary, Bernie and the fringe players?

If Johnny comes marching home again to Texas, he can channel in the great Dallas Cowboy quarterback Don Meredith – allegedly sometimes still a bit tipsy in the huddle on Sunday afternoons after closing down those bars around Mockingbird Lane in Dallas. He allegedly sang country western songs upon entering the huddle. See Johnny Manziel already has credentials. I suppose they are not appreciated as much in Cleveland.

The only thing we Cowboy fans want are New Jerseys that read Winners Super Bowl 51!

Friday, January 15, 2016 – The Case of the Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport – College Football and Kangaroos.

Zippy Kangaroo

The University of Akron mascot, Zippy Kangaroo University of Akron official website.

Good morning, Class – Before we begin our discussion of The Case of the Tie Me Kangaroo Down HWIT post, let’s take time away from instruction and assess something. From one of the Vocabulary Words portions of assessment practice, “Please use the noun “hebetude” or the state of being dull or lethargic in a sentence.”

Response: “He wanted to get up from the chair, but hebetude tired.”

And now to our group projects. Who wants to go first?

I do. If you read the comments on the actual HWIT site, Reggie Reader commented on the January 6, 2016 HWIT and presented a puzzle about college football and kangaroos.

Nancy Drew, here.

Dear Reggie Reader, I believe I have cracked The Case of Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport. Like all school projects, I did not have any help from my friends, Bess or George (the manly looking George whose real name was Georgia– what was that all about?) or that worthless boyfriend of mine, Ned. I had to do the project all by myself.

The MAIN clue (I so amuse myself) is The Old Main Building on the Sam Houston State University campus that burned on February 12, 1982.

If these responses are incorrect, then I think it was Colonel Mustard in the library with the lead pipe.

“Dear Madam Rose……… Now that most bowl games are behind us…….until 1/11 that is…… here are a series of bowl related puzzlers to ponder while waiting for the Ags to select a QB and/or OC.

A Div 1 bowl team is blessed with a kangaroo for a head coach. Can you name the coach & team

The Potato Bowl (or Potatoe Bowl if you are Dan Quayle), Head Coach for The University of Akron, Terry Bowden.

A different Div1 bowl team’s head coach has kangaroos on his résumé……..as well as the Hall of Fame. Can you name the coach?

Hall of Fame Coach Bill Snyder currently Head Coach at Kansas State served as Offensive Coordinator at Austin College from 1974 to1975.

Yet another Div 1 bowl team, in a record tying victory, utilized a QB who is a member of a kangaroo family. Can you name the team & QB ?

Former head coach at The Ohio State University, Jim Tressell, (2000-2010) played quarterback for The University of Akron from 1975-1978. The mascot for The University of Akron is Zippy the Kangaroo.

Hint….think Old Main.”

I did, Reader Reggie – You son of a preacher man! A Presbyterian one if I recall.

From the Austin College website – Austin College opened in Huntsville, Texas and admitted its first class in the fall of 1850. Its original building still stands in Huntsville.

From the Sam Houston State University website – The university’s original three buildings were: Austin, Main, and Peabody.

Fever epidemics, the Civil War, and difficult economic conditions prompted the College’s relocation to north Texas. Austin College moved to Sherman, a more promising area, in 1876.

When The Old Main Building on the Sam Houston campus burned, efforts to save that building switched to save The Austin Building one of the original buildings of what was called Austin College.

http://buildingshsu.com/m/main_building/

The D-1 Bowl clues were helpful. I almost got side tracked by this Kangaroo – aka in mysteries as “the red herring.”

The head football coach for Austin College in Sherman, Texas is Loren Dawson who played for Austin College before transferring to Arizona State University where he graduated with both Bachelors and Masters Degrees. Coach Dawson returned and served as Defensive Coordinator at Austin College before becoming head coach. The mascot of the liberal arts focused and Presbyterian supported college is Katy the Kangaroo.

Reader Reggie, is there a prize? Thanks for the challenge. I should make an A, but not Bess, George or Ned.

Thursday, January 7, 2016 – Throw Back Thursday – WE’RE FROM M-H-S AND NO ONE COULD BE PROUDER AND IF YOU CANNOT HEAR US, WE’LL YELL A LITTLE LOUDER!

Great memories of yellow buses full of teenagers screaming this as the band buses rolled into an opponent’s stadium under the Friday night lights. So today is a throwback to all of the Magnolia ISD football teams and especially to this one – 1952 – I think.  District 34 B District Champs!

The photographs come from two of the Rickett girls – Tracy and Suzanne (and their brothers – Ricky and Jon too). See the quarterback – your Uncle Mann? That is Big Don in the back field.

The Awards Program is from my collection. It appears most of the team received some type of recognition. Their faces are pretty easy to see since there were no face masks – even during play. Check out the opponents on the schedule.

Wednesday, January 6, 2016 – Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport! Or Some Puzzling Questions.

A most valued reader of Here’s What I’m Thinking left a football puzzle as a comment the other day. Thank you, Reader Reggie for reading and the comment. I do not know the answers so I am offering the puzzlers to others today. I can think of many D-I college football coaches that are considered donkeys, but I am going have to jump around online to research coaching kangaroos.

And now, jumping to our puzzle.

Can you name the coach & team ?

Hint….think Old Main.”

Initial thoughts.

  • # 1: Too bad it is not Kliff Kingsbury from Tortilla Tech. It would make such great alliteration.
  • # 2: Dear Coach Kingsbury, I know you love your alma mater, and you are cranking it up a notch, but just in case you have not heard, the Offensive Coordinator position is open at Texas A&M.
  • # 3: One QB has already selected the Texas Aggies and with high school signing day now less than a month I am sure others will select the Harvard on the Brazos as their choice. Meanwhile – SEC! SEC! SEC! ROLL TIDE!

Old Main? – Sam Houston State University once had a building called Old Main.

I shall seek intellectual guidance and stimulation at the local Academic Salon where all Aggies go to think deep thoughts.

Campus tour 7.5.2014 2014-07-05 098 (800x600)

If you can solve the puzzle, please contact Reader Reggie for your prize. I think it is a stuffed kangaroo.
