Friday, February 26, 2016 – How is Your Circadian Rhythm? Or It Sucks to Work Before 10 AM.

How is Your Circadian Rhythm? Or It Sucks to Work before 10 AM. Circadian rhythm is not a salsa dance. FYI – I am writing this at 11: 18 AM.

Thank to my friend for sharing Dr. Paul Kelley’s article. It is an excellent, worth the read, article and a should be shared article. We all know our circadian rhythm is boxed into a time frame, and it impacts working, learning, moods, behavior and STRESSSSSSSSSSSSSS levels!!!

I encourage you to read Dr. Kelly’s article. But since this is Here’s What I’m Thinking and not Here’s What I’m Sharing, I want you to read my article.

Here’s What I’m Thinking – The government must do their own research study and of course we will need a committee, it will require lots of tax dollar funding and will take a long time, but every government employee at the state and federal level does not begin work until after 10 AM anyway. Of course, one must be in their cube or in their government-beige office in front of their computer screen at some unholy hour in the morning.

Of course by that time, it is 10:15 and time for my government required 15 minute break. OK – It is now 10:35 AM and time to go to work. Note to taxpayer – it will take somewhere between six to eight months to name the study before work actually begins and will waste time and money. Travelling at government standard time, let’s fast forward to the conclusions.

Conclusions to government research study –

  • Dr. Kelly is correct. It sucks to start work before 10 AM!
  • If you know the humorous parable about “10:00 AM and government employees,” PLEASE DO NOT TELL IT ON MY BLOG OR TIMELINE – DALE!!! While hilariously funny and so true in the worlds of government, it not suitable for young children. If one wants to hear words such as those he or she can watch the presidential candidates.

Happy Friday. Oh my! It is 12:06. I am late for lunch.

Buddy Glasses

Dr. Paul Kelley, a researcher at Oxford University, has scientifically corroborated the claim that nearly every worker to ever live has made: that it sucks to work before 10 AM. In an interview, Kelley said:

“Before the age of 55, the circadian rhythms of adults are completely out of sync with normal nine-to-five working hours, posing a “serious threat” to performance, mood and mental health.”

Friday, February 19, 2016 – Pope Francis and the Governor of Texas

Friday, February 19, 2016 – Pope Francis and the Governor of Texas

I see where the Governor of Texas had a scheduling conflict and was not able to welcome the Pope to Mexico from the El Paso side. Seems the governor was to swear in the new commissioner of education – Mr. Voucher. I can certainly understand the governor’s rationale for such a decision. The last time the Pope met with an American leader, Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, and Boehner resigned the next day. Texas should be so lucky. Doesn’t this entire political mess make you want to swear too?

Trivia – Where did Denver Broncos Head Coach Gary Kubiak graduate from high school? Where did Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller graduate from high school?

Love you, Cam! Good Luck, Carolina! Sorry Phillip! But did you really think I was NOT going to stand with the Former Students of Texas A&M University? Gary Kubiak was the quarterback for The Fighting Texas Aggies when I stood in the boiling afternoon sun on the east side in Kyle Field in the 1980’s. And how about Consensus All American in 2009 and in 2010 Texas A&M linebacker, Von Miller? We have breathed the air of Kyle Field and Aggieland.

Here is a Horse Laugh to the uniformed sports reporter who referred to them as “Former Aggies.” There is no such thing as a Former Aggie. We are known as Former Students and we are ALWAYS a Texas Aggie. It probably has something to do with breathing the air of Kyle Field and Aggieland.

So Here’s to the Denver Broncos

and

BTHO Carolina in Super Bowl 50!

Trivia answers: Gary Kubiak graduated from St. Pius X in Houston, Texas in 1978.

Von Miller graduated from DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas in 2007.

Wednesday, January 27, 2016 – The Cam Newton Effect – Besides Being Really Hot Looking and an Outstanding Football Player

The Brazos Valley is abuzz over the Cam Newton Effect. Thirty miles down the road a piece from Bryan is Brenham Texas – Home of Blinn College. Blinn still feels the effects of when Cam Newton played quarterback there. He led the 2009 Blinn Buccaneers to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Football Championship.

On February 7, 2016, he will lead his team, the Carolina Panthers, in the 50th Anniversary of the NFL Super Bowl. He seems to have done well between Blinn and Carolina too. Let’s see – a Heisman Trophy, a 2011 National Football Championship for Auburn (Auburn 22 – Oregon 19) and a Bachelor’s Degree in May 2015. Note: his degree is in Sociology – me and Cam!

http://www.people.com/article/cam-newton-graduates-from-college-gets-new-contract

Here is a screen shot of my TV on Monday, January 25 showing the Bryan KAGS news reporter sitting where Cam Newton sat in his English class at Blinn.

KAGS Reporter Cam Newton Desk (800x450)

In her interview here is what his English teacher said about him:

  • It was a Monday, Wednesday, Friday class at 8:00 AM.
  • He always had that great big smile.
  • He was never absent.
  • He was never late.
  • He worked as hard in the classroom as he did on the field.

The Cam Newton effect extends far beyond football and a small college in Texas. It is about working hard to achieve your dreams, keeping your promise to your Mama about getting that sheepskin, always doing your best and thinking about others. Note: Cam Newton chose not to walk at Auburn graduation ceremonies because he did not want to distract from others’ graduation.

I am currently unaware of plans for a plaque marking the seat with Cam Newton Sat Here, but I would support it if there are plans.

Monday January 25, 2016 – Teachers, May I Have Your Attention, Please? Pardon This Interruption.

Remember when class room instructional time was interrupted by multiple daily announcements over the loud speaker system?

Pardon this interruption, Teachers. May I have your attention please? This is for all K-12 Educators, including but not limited to really good classroom teachers, technology coordinators, principals, assistant principals, supervisors, and central office administrators.

From the January 23, 2016 Bryan Eagle – plus all over social media

An eighth grader in a Texas ISD had to serve a day in suspension for carrying a friend having an asthma attack to the school nurse. He “was reprimanded because a teacher told him not to leave class.”

The girl had trouble breathing and fell to the floor. “The teacher contacted the nurse and awaited an email response.” THE TEACHER SENT THE NURSE AN EMAIL??? WTF? There is a child/student/person lying on your floor unable to breath and you sent an email to the nurse?

The teacher said “the boy said an expletive about not waiting for email and carried his friend to the nurse because he feared the girl would die.”

Ship wreck 2 (800x537)

Ship wreck – Photo by me – In Maine – I think.

I hope if I ever fall on the floor unable to breath that the eighth grader is there and not the teacher. Have you not passed your test to obtain certification in Common Sense?

Here’s what I’m thinking – the teacher should be suspended as in, without pay. But as Ron White says – “Can’t fix stupid.” Too bad it teaches our children.

PS – Girl OK and later sent a TEXT stating such.

Wednesday, January 20, 2016 – Snarky Wednesday! – Otto Von B., Donald T., Hillary C., and all the rest.

Just when you thought it was safe to start reading Here’s What I’m Thinking. Today is for those of you who have missed The Snark. You can skip to the end for the zingers if you do not want to read the backstory.

On this day – some 365 days from now – in 2017 somebody is going to be sworn in as the POTUS and a bunch of people are just going to be swearing. Every morning after each presidential election I would write the following sentence on the chalkboard of my classroom, on the white board in my office or a stickie note on my office door. I wanted to write it early in case any of the candidates are elected and I seriously consider going to live with Miss Rolene in the islands.

God protects fools, drunks and the United States of America.

From the website: http://www.barrypopik.com/index.php/new_york_city/entry/there_is_a_providence_that_protects_idiots_drunkards_children_and_the_unite

“There is a providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children, and the United States of America” is often said to be a quotation of Otto von Bismarck (1818-1898). The quotation in the form “God always helps fools, lovers and drunkards” exists in French from at least 1708. In 1849, “the special providence over the United States and little children” was attributed to Abbé Correa.

The old French proverb was credited to Bismarck in 1907. The proverb—in its many forms—is still cited. Prince Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck, Duke of Lauenburg (1 April 1815 – 30 July 1898) German aristocrat and statesman; Prime Minister of Prussia (1862 -1890), First Chancellor of Germany (1871 – 1890); he is nicknamed the Iron Chancellor and is noted for the laconicity of his statements. Misattributed This saying appears as early as 1849 in the form “the special providence over the United States and little children”, attributed to Abbé Correa. There is no good evidence that Bismarck ever repeated it.”

Here’s what I’m thinking – since everything that comes out of the presidential candidates’ mouths tends to be misquoted, I thought I would at least try to accurately attribute the quote.

The Iron Chancellor? Hmm? Historically it was a time of evolving social, economic and political change. It was a time that involved significant changes brought about by foreign wars – mostly started and/or caused by Bismark – to unify Germany. Immigrants were emigrating all over the place. (My peeps were already in the United States – from Ireland, England and France – just think if the Irish and the Catholics had not been allowed in the country.) The French even tried to build a wall to keep out the Germans. Historically in times such as these Chancellor has been translated as Dictator.

Question to Mr. Donald Trump. Allegedly 41% of your followers think the United States should bomb the city of Agra bah. Since that is the fictional town in the movie Aladdin, will the bombings be done from fictional airplanes and/ or with fictional missiles?

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/poll-finds-41-trump-voters-bomb-aladdin-city-article-1.2470693

Did I mention I have a degree in history with emphasis in the rise of Bismark and the Age of Revolution?   Bismark was a cause of the Age of Revolutions. Draw your own conclusions.

Friday, January 15, 2016 – The Case of the Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport – College Football and Kangaroos.

Zippy Kangaroo

The University of Akron mascot, Zippy Kangaroo University of Akron official website.

Good morning, Class – Before we begin our discussion of The Case of the Tie Me Kangaroo Down HWIT post, let’s take time away from instruction and assess something. From one of the Vocabulary Words portions of assessment practice, “Please use the noun “hebetude” or the state of being dull or lethargic in a sentence.”

Response: “He wanted to get up from the chair, but hebetude tired.”

And now to our group projects. Who wants to go first?

I do. If you read the comments on the actual HWIT site, Reggie Reader commented on the January 6, 2016 HWIT and presented a puzzle about college football and kangaroos.

Nancy Drew, here.

Dear Reggie Reader, I believe I have cracked The Case of Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport. Like all school projects, I did not have any help from my friends, Bess or George (the manly looking George whose real name was Georgia– what was that all about?) or that worthless boyfriend of mine, Ned. I had to do the project all by myself.

The MAIN clue (I so amuse myself) is The Old Main Building on the Sam Houston State University campus that burned on February 12, 1982.

If these responses are incorrect, then I think it was Colonel Mustard in the library with the lead pipe.

“Dear Madam Rose……… Now that most bowl games are behind us…….until 1/11 that is…… here are a series of bowl related puzzlers to ponder while waiting for the Ags to select a QB and/or OC.

A Div 1 bowl team is blessed with a kangaroo for a head coach. Can you name the coach & team

The Potato Bowl (or Potatoe Bowl if you are Dan Quayle), Head Coach for The University of Akron, Terry Bowden.

A different Div1 bowl team’s head coach has kangaroos on his résumé……..as well as the Hall of Fame. Can you name the coach?

Hall of Fame Coach Bill Snyder currently Head Coach at Kansas State served as Offensive Coordinator at Austin College from 1974 to1975.

Yet another Div 1 bowl team, in a record tying victory, utilized a QB who is a member of a kangaroo family. Can you name the team & QB ?

Former head coach at The Ohio State University, Jim Tressell, (2000-2010) played quarterback for The University of Akron from 1975-1978. The mascot for The University of Akron is Zippy the Kangaroo.

Hint….think Old Main.”

I did, Reader Reggie – You son of a preacher man! A Presbyterian one if I recall.

From the Austin College website – Austin College opened in Huntsville, Texas and admitted its first class in the fall of 1850. Its original building still stands in Huntsville.

From the Sam Houston State University website – The university’s original three buildings were: Austin, Main, and Peabody.

Fever epidemics, the Civil War, and difficult economic conditions prompted the College’s relocation to north Texas. Austin College moved to Sherman, a more promising area, in 1876.

When The Old Main Building on the Sam Houston campus burned, efforts to save that building switched to save The Austin Building one of the original buildings of what was called Austin College.

http://buildingshsu.com/m/main_building/

The D-1 Bowl clues were helpful. I almost got side tracked by this Kangaroo – aka in mysteries as “the red herring.”

The head football coach for Austin College in Sherman, Texas is Loren Dawson who played for Austin College before transferring to Arizona State University where he graduated with both Bachelors and Masters Degrees. Coach Dawson returned and served as Defensive Coordinator at Austin College before becoming head coach. The mascot of the liberal arts focused and Presbyterian supported college is Katy the Kangaroo.

Reader Reggie, is there a prize? Thanks for the challenge. I should make an A, but not Bess, George or Ned.

Thursday, January 7, 2016 – Throw Back Thursday – WE’RE FROM M-H-S AND NO ONE COULD BE PROUDER AND IF YOU CANNOT HEAR US, WE’LL YELL A LITTLE LOUDER!

Great memories of yellow buses full of teenagers screaming this as the band buses rolled into an opponent’s stadium under the Friday night lights. So today is a throwback to all of the Magnolia ISD football teams and especially to this one – 1952 – I think.  District 34 B District Champs!

The photographs come from two of the Rickett girls – Tracy and Suzanne (and their brothers – Ricky and Jon too). See the quarterback – your Uncle Mann? That is Big Don in the back field.

The Awards Program is from my collection. It appears most of the team received some type of recognition. Their faces are pretty easy to see since there were no face masks – even during play. Check out the opponents on the schedule.

Monday, January 4, 2016 – The Last Monday After Saturday Football Awards for this Season

Monday, January 4, 2016 – The Last Monday After Saturday Football Awards for this Season

And then there was one. There is only one more college football game on January 11 between Clemson and Alabama for the National Football Championship. Then it is withdrawal until September, watching ESPN Classic on cable TV, or watching the 2005 National Championship game over and over on The Longhorn Network.

So today is my last college football awards until kickoff next Fall. And the winner is:

The backup to the backup to the backup … Quarterback. To the Jakes, Jarretts, Chrises, the Oregon back-up, all who stepped up when the guy in front of you left for whatever reason and especially to Bram Kolhausan from TCU: All of you win the Ready, Wait and Win Award. TCU – Thank you for a game for the ages. Thank goodness I flipped back to ESPN (who else?) just as the first of three overtimes began.

So if sports and athletics teach you about life, then learn from these back up players.

  • Be ready.
  • Never give up.
  • You are the best at what you do or you would not be where you are. But there is always somebody waiting just behind you who can take your place.
  • Regardless of how good you are, or think you are, you are not indispensable.

Wednesday, December 30, 2-15 – An Attack of Bureaucracy, Bears and Tigers and On My T-Shirt Soapbox

Wednesday, December 30, 2-15 – An Attack of Bureaucracy, Bears and Tigers and On My T-Shirt Soapbox

But first – Who needs a quarterback when you can just run the football? Congratulations to Baylor and their record setting college football bowl game for most rushing yards. Run, Johnny, Run. Speaking of running and rushing, how about that Leonard Fournette? Geaux Tigers!

Texas Tech, the red shoes were working for you. They looked good on TV. Too bad you could not click your red shoes together three times and say “There’s no place like Lubbock.” You still have one of the best looking coaches and next year you will have a defense. Meanwhile, tie that quarterback down. He is a good one.

As I said, I had an attack of bureaucracy the other day when reading a Facebook post and decided to make up some rules to alleviate the attack.

The great, Kris Kristofferson sings the theme song of all bureaucracies “When you waste your time a talking to the people who don’t listen, who do you think’s gonna care?” Nevertheless, like all recovering bureaucrats, I am still going to respond. I told you I had an attack of bureaucracy, but I did not call together a committee or focus group. It is just my brain, as usual.

The individual’s post was the person’s reflection on college student athletes and their inability to articulate during an interview. The individual went on to say “perhaps the athletes should be required to take an English course to learn to speak.” I just happen to know the individual is a T-shirt wearer only and never attended college.

Here’s What I’m Thinking – There is a distinct difference between the individual who only wears the T-shirt of their favorite college or university and one who attended and earned it. We see the sacrifices from the inside not the outside. Unless one actually put in the sacrifices necessary to earn that T-shirt, one has a completely different perspective. This includes spouses’ and parents’ sacrifices so their husbands, wives, children and grandchildren could attend college and earn that T-shirt. An even better proof of sacrifice is the sheepskin with the funny looking letters written on it for the Baccalaurean Degrees (or other designated degrees) Sidebar: when is the last time you used “Baccalaurean” in a sentence? See what going to college can do?

Here are some thing for you to think about, FB Poster, before you criticize a student athlete and their skill sets.

Rule 1 – NEVER criticize the student-athlete. This is a young person who is performing in a classroom setting that just happens to have millions of people watching.

Rule 2 – Do not make judgements based on a single interview of an individual player.

Rule 3 – Be in the moment. Think back to when you were 18-to 21 years old. How articulate were you when a national reporter shoved a microphone in your face? Especially after the adrenaline rush of a football game you have just played. One just might be a paleontology major with a 3.0+ GPA who really does not like to speak in public.

Rule 4 – Ensure you have the correct course of study. Student athletes are required to take public speaking courses. Not English courses. They are not going to write a book or a poem or diagram a sentence. They not only take courses in public speaking, they are required to take seminars in professional dress and professional dining etiquette. This is not to mention job interviewing skills.

Rule 5 – One may criticize and/or critique the coaching staff, the refereeing squad and the so-called “professional” commentators. Most of these people should be criticized, critiqued and even fired for their lack of speaking skills and use of proper grammar and their inability to articulate. They are paid to be “professional.” The student athlete is not. He or she is just trying to do what they love and be the best at it.

I am so glad FB Poster loves college football and supports their team, but please think about this – the players may be 10 feet tall, weigh 400 pounds, or can out run the wind, but inside they are still kids.

Now, I am going to put on my T-Shirt for tonight’s Music City Bowl. Gig ‘Em, Aggies!
