Tuesday, October 23, 2018 – The Great American Read Finale, My Favorite Novel and Grogan Cochran Lumber Company

Tonight is the finale of The Great American Read. The number one novel that received the most votes will be announced as America’s favorite novel.

There was a three-way tie for the correct response to my favorite novel. Of course, there were only three votes, but you are all correct. Yes, my favorite novel is Harper Lee’s 1960 publication and Pulitzer Prize winning To Kill a Mockingbird. So Beckie, Barbara and Debbie get to split the $11.50 I usually receive for turning in my books to Half-Price Books.

If you did not already know the correct response, the clue was in “Scout out the list to see if you can find it.” Scout, of course, is Atticus Finch’s daughter in To Kill a Mockingbird.

If you are old enough to remember Paul Harvey, as he would say “And now the rest of the story.”

In 1955 the Magnolia ISD board of trustees called for a $150,000 bond issue. The purpose was to construct a new cafeteria and a band hall, construct two classrooms at the high school, and make general improvements to all of the campuses in the district.

The tax base of Magnolia ISD was the lumber company. Grogan Cochran. Mr. Henry Grogan was against the bond issue because it included improvements to the segregated black school and encouraged his employees to vote again the bond issue.

Nevertheless, the bond issue passed and improvements were made across the district regardless of color lines.

Many years later, in cleaning out my father’s house we found a letter on Grogan Cochran Lumber Company stationery dated 1960. It was his termination letter from Grogan Cochran. My father was still alive and we asked him about the letter. All he said “Yep. If you are going to make improvements to one school you are going to make improvements to all of the schools.”

I hope there is a little bit of Atticus Finch in all of us today.

All of the original papers associated with this story – the bond issue announcement, the blue prints for construction and improvements, the school district’s status report in 1955 and my father’s termination of employment letter reside in the Magnolia Depot.

Tuesday, September 18, 2018 – OOOOOOOklahoma!

Tuesday, September 18, 2018 – OOOOOOOklahoma!

OOOOOOklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain,
And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rainnnnnnn OOOOOklahoma…

Last Sunday at the Hobby Center in Houston I saw a stage production of my favorite musical – Oklahoma. The opening notes of the Overture just make my heart beat faster. Then Curly walks on the stage and begins “Oh what a beautiful morning…” I remember my mother singing that song. But I am mesmerized until the final curtain call.

I’m just a girl who cain’t say no the musical Oklahoma. Speaking of Ado Annie, I hope Mary Jo does not mind if I tell this story.

Years ago when the institution of higher education was call East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, the theatre department presented Oklahoma. If I recall, one of Mary Jo’s relatives was in the production and all of the relatives from all over East Texas came to opening night. This included Grandpaw.

The relative had the role of Ado Annie. Right in the middle of her song “I’m just a girl who cain’t say no”, Grandpaw jumped and yelled “SHE’S A WHORE!”

I believe as they say “the show went on” but I am not certain about the young lady’s acting career.

From the CinemaScope version of the 1955 Rodgers and Hammerstein film, “Oklahoma!”. Gloria Grahame performs “I Cain’t Say No”. Enjoy.

Tuesday, September 11, 2018 – What Are You Thinking?

Can you believe it has been 17 years since the planes crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, into The Pentagon in Washington D.C. and into the Twin Towers in New York City?

Our memories are as vibrant today as they were then. While we reflect and vow to never forget, we must also remember that every aspect of our world and our society changed that day. How we deal with the changes resulting from that day determines how we feel and act today.

Wednesday, September 5, 2018 – Golf

For the first time in almost two months I made it to the golf course today. I was torn between playing 18 holes and arresting the woman in our foursome for wearing white pants after Labor Day. I am sure the indecision was a factor in my poor play. However, since the woman just moved to Texas from Wisconsin, she is probably unaware of this Southern fashion faux paux, I just gave her a warning ticket.

Friday, August 31, 2018 – Snarky Friday

Friday, August 31, 2018 – Snarky Friday

Happy Snarky Football Friday. Last night we had the opportunity to see two schools’ fund raisers to fund their entire athletic department. Pistol Pete and the Cowboys of Oklahoma State beat Missouri State 58-17. That Mullet is looking good, Mike.

Of course my eyes were glued to the Texas Aggies versus Northwestern State. I told you, Demons, that Kyle Field was loud. Three false starts in a row on the first series. Twelfth Man.

Of course we all held our breath when Northwestern scored in the Fourth Quarter. So what if the Aggies were ahead 50+ to zero. Final score Aggies 59 and Northwestern 7 plus a large percentage the gate receipts like Missouri State gets.

In the horrible 11:00 AM spot on Saturday we have following games with teams who must have done something back to get stuck here.

In the O-State battle we find Ohio State and Oregon State on ABC. The Beavers and Suspension.

Also at the non-football game time of 11 am we find THE University of Texas and Maryland on FS 1. Was it really necessary to throw Texas coach, Tom Herman, under that bus because he went to a strip club with the domestic abuser? What are you trying to do? Go dot your “I” with a tuba, Ohio State.

Hotty Totty, God Almighty! On ESPN we have the Rebels of Old Miss and the Raiders of Texas Tech. I do not think you are allowed to throw tortillas at NRG Stadium in Houston or write graffiti on the buses, Tech.

The Sooners of Oklahoma and QB Kyler Murray take on FAU (whoever that is and I’m too lazy to look it up) on FOX. I hope Murray has gained some weight. When he played for Texas A&M, he looked like he was one tackle away from a body cast.

Clemson and Furman kickoff at 11:20 on ACC Network. Come on Furman Paladins. Hope Clemson is looking ahead to next week.

The dogs are let out at 2:30 when the Washington Huskies meet the Auburn Tigers. This could be big for both the PAC 12 and the SEC conferences. It’s on ABC.

Opposite on CBS we find the Georgia Bulldogs playing the Austin Peay Governors. UGA going to peay all over the Governors.

Speaking of bulldogs. At 6:30 on ESPNU it’s the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. I must root for SFA since I have papers from there. However, I fear that Bullie will pee on the pines before the Jacks can give them the Ax.

In the big game, the Tide comes rolling in as Alabama and Louisville kickoff at 7:00 on ABC. In a Snark closing, I would like to say the following to all of the sports mouths. Nick Saban will decide who starts at quarterback for Alabama. All of you mouths are just speculating. I’m sure if Coach Saban needs your input he will call you. Roll Tide.

Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions

MEDITATION XVII.

By John Donne

NUNC LENTO SONITU DICUNT, MORIERIS.

Now this bell tolling softly for another,
says to me, Thou must die.

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.”

The iconic, Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin passed away this morning. The Heavenly Choir received a voice of the ages.

In 2010 Franklin received the Number 1 spot on Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” So many songs. Here are two that we all know by heart.

Long live the Queen

Tuesday, July 31 – Bye Bye Miss American Pie

Tuesday, July 31 – Bye Bye Miss American Pie

If there was ever a Chevy to be driven to the levee it would be one like this one.

I was on my way to the grocery store and this classic was in front of me. I was indeed blessed with the luck of the Irish as the car turned into the grocery store lot.

Upon parking a lovely couple got out. I parked nearby and walked over. I asked if I could take a picture of the car. The man went on to say “We got it when we got married in 1957. Bought it brand new off the showroom floor. It is the only car we have ever had. We have been to 48 of the 50 states and it has over 250,000 miles on it.”

I know. I was speechless too. I bet the couple have miles and miles of stories about their travels and their 1957 Chevy.
