Friday, February 12, 2016 – Hearts, Flowers, Chocolates and I Love You Too!

Friday, February 12, 2016 – Hearts, Flowers, Chocolates and I Love You Too!

Sunday is Valentine’s Day. Remember when we put little shoe boxes on our desks in elementary school? Classmates would come around and drop little cards with hearts and sayings like “Be Sweet” or “Be My Valentine.”

hearts and flowers

Now it is just “Gimme those chocolate covered strawberries and get out of my way!”

Strawberries

Here’s what I’m thinking – I thought it would really set my neighborhood on its ear if I set up a kissing booth in my front yard on Sunday morning. I could sell kisses and donate to the funds charity. Then again, I realized who lives in my neighborhood and I can’t offer handicap parking or access for my kissing booth. There is no room for scooters, walkers, wheel chairs and those who just take tiny steps.

The neighborhood association is already bent out of shape because the new neighbor at the end of the cul-de-sac painted her fence red. Perhaps I will stroll down late Saturday night and graffiti some hearts, flowers, chocolates and I Love You Too on her fence.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Now where are those chocolate covered strawberries?

I see where Adele has joined a growing number of recording artists who have had to tell presidential candidates – “Quit violating copyright laws. You cannot use my recordings!”

Here’s what I’m thinking – every librarian – from elementary school libraries to specialized libraries knows copyright laws, rules and regulations. If these candidates (and their campaign staffs) do not know or understand and violate copyright laws, should we entrust the laws of our land to them?

Thursday, January 21, 2016 – Throw Back Thursday to Hieroglyphics or Saint Emoticon – Patron Saint of the Inarticulate

Thursday, January 21, 2016 – Throw Back Thursday to Hieroglyphics or Saint Emoticon – Patron Saint of the Inarticulate

Throw Back Thursday all the way back to the ancient Egyptians. They drew pictures on the walls called hieroglyphics. Fast forward to today and we have emoticons.

Doctor hat on: Definition: An emoticon is an etymologically a portmanteau of emotion and icon, is a metacommunicative pictorial representation of a facial expression that, in the absence of body language and prosody, serves to draw a receiver’s attention to the tenor or temper of a sender’s nominal non-verbal communication, changing and improving its interpretation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticon

Doctor hat off: My definition: An emoticon is a teeny tiny picture trying to show what the writer is expressing; it is too small for most eyes to see, sounds like it is a anti diarrhea medicine and has facial expressions that I do not understand.

Furthermore emoticons vary between Eastern and Western cultures. Someone in Japan may be nonverbally saying “Have a nice day” while some in New York may nonverbally be saying with the same emoticon “Oh crap; more snow.” I am unable to tell if I am wishing someone happiness or telling them to kiss my ass.

For example: The emoticon on the left resembles the front grill of a 1962 Thunderbird automobile with headlight covers, while the emoticon on the right seems to be expressing singing a Stevie Wonder song with a hockey stick smile.

emoticons (800x450)

Therefore, do not expect to see a great use of emoticons from me. Besides, what if space aliens landed and all that was left of our culture was emoticons about the Kardashians?

Monday, January 18, 2016 – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  – Dream It. Believe It. Make It Happen.

Today in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., please think about the following two excerpts from his I Have a Dream Speech, delivered on August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C. Think about the words he said then and review them in light of the world today.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

—-

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Now go out there and make the world a better place.

Tuesday, January 12, 2015 – It’s OUR Birthday! Happy Birthday to my Favorite Sister and to One of My High School Classmates.

Tuesday, January 12, 2015 – It’s OUR Birthday! Happy Birthday to my Favorite Sister and to One of My High School Classmates.

Happy Birthday to Sister Dale and Dear Friend, Mollie!

I know you were paying close attention to detail yesterday and immediately noticed that in yesterday’s post, Molly’s name was spelled M-O-L-LY. Today it is spelled M- O-L-L-I- E. This is because Molly/ie was way ahead of her time as she was in most things and like most young ladies in their teen years, they experimented with the changing of her name. I have yet to determine how some of my classmates and friends spell their first names. I wanted to change my name to Pdelia with a silent “P” but mother would not let me.

As I mentioned in an earlier HWIT post, Mollie and I shared birthday parties at age six and again at age 13. I think we may have had a Sweet 16, but I really do not remember and can find no photographs. Here are some photographs from the party when we were six. It is OK, Celeste to change one of your FB comments – “As I recall, you were rather spoiled” to totally spoiled. Everybody knew it (knows it?).

The Birthday Party of Delia and Mollie – January 12 or 13, 1955 – Age 6 – Magnolia, Texas – Sawmill House

Prior to the arrival of guests

That was the cutest little dress – a black velvetin top with a darling gro-grain black and white checked skirt. I refused to wear it! Obviously, notice who won that dress war. Notice the look of sheer happiness on my face. Perhaps it was the orthopedic shoes. It also appears that I just received a haircut from Barber Clark who was the barber at the sawmill.

You think I am going to smile wearing this? It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.

image17

The “best” smile I could muster.

The Party

I do not remember those little girls at the end of the table, but the one on the right does not appear to be having a good time. Is that Melanie Swann?

BD 1 (800x495)

You can bet that homemade cake had perfect 7 minute icing with a devil’s food chocolate inside. Still my favorite cake of all time. Notice the cake is already cut from one side? Who did that? Why our lovely Mollie. That is her head in the foreground.

And then my turn. I am so pissed at this point, I am surprised my mother allowed a knife in my hands. Notice Mollie’s ensemble? I am quite confident I gave my mother the best dirty look at six year old can muster –

image10 (800x542)

Miss Mae Emma let Mollie wear blue jeans and flannel shirt and you made me wear this dress! With orthopedic shoes no less!

Kristen, I have seen that same look and silly grin on your face many times.  Talk about genetics!

Sweet Memories. Dear Friends.

Tuesday, December 22, 2015 – The Winner of the 2015 National College Football Championship is “Texas A&M University!” Steve Harvey announced today.

Mr. M. C.? How could you make such a blunder and announce the wrong contestant as the winner in the beauty pageant? OK – “It’s a scholarship pageant.” So Here’s What I’m Thinking…

Remember the final scenes of Miss Congeniality when Gracie Lee Hart is on stage and crowns are being ripped off, Miss Rhode Island is in tears, and floral bouquets are being used as weapons? How many would like to have seen that take place as the final scenes of the Miss Universe Pageant the other night when Steve Harvey announced Miss Columbia as winner instead of First Runner-up to Miss Philippines?

Better yet. How many would like to see Suzanne Sugarbaker as Miss Columbia? I would like to see Miss Philippines trying to get the crown off of her head.

And finally, if it had been Suzanne Sugarbaker who was really first runner up, image the ass chewing Julia Sugarbaker would give Steve Harvey.

Ya’ll have a good day now. Go out there and promote world peace. And remember we are all Queen of Something! So wear your crowns proudly.

“A horse!” A horse! My kingdom for a horse!” from Shakespeare’s Richard III, Act 5, Scene 4, lines 7-10.

Texas version. “A quarterback! A quarterback. My team for a quarterback!” From Texas’ Coach V, Teams 5 (schools), Scene 5, (Bowls and Championships), players 10+

The five teams Baylor, Texas A&M, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and the Celina Bobcats (3A high school state championship lost the quarterback to a broken wrist on the first series played. Celina lost the game too.)

And now the Second Quarter of The Ridiculous Number of College Football Bowl Games that no one really cares about.

December 23

Bowl Number 11 – The GoDaddy Bowl begins at 8:00 PM on ESPN between Georgia Southern and Bowling Green. Go Daddy. This name offers so many directions. Let’s just say Go Daddy and leave the rest to TV commercials and social workers.

December 24 – Christmas Eve

Bowl 12 is The Popeye’s’ Bahamas Bowl that kicks off at noon on ESPN between Middle Tennessee and Western Michigan. I am not certain if the name of this bowl refers to the chicken franchise or the cartoon sailor. Who cares about the teams? One is in the Bahamas.

Bowl 13 is the Hawaii Bowl at 8:00 PM between San Diego State and Cincinnati on ESPN. Same criteria for Hawaii as Bahamas – who cares who is playing? Get me a drink with an umbrella in it.

December 26

Bowl 14 finds us in St. Petersburg to watch Connecticut and Marshall on our monopolistic favorite ESPN at 11: 00 AM. I would love to be in St. Pete again but only with J and R again.

Bowl 15 finds The Hyundai Sun Bowl between Miami and Washington State at 2:00 PM on CBS. Look you can change the channel to CBS.

Bowl 16 – is The I am so Bored Bowl. No wait. It is the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl between Washington and Southern Mississippi on ESPN. The Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas? Are you kidding me? Back to The I am so Bored Bowl. Anyway it is at 2:00.

Bowl 17 – The New Era Pinstripe Bowl between Indiana and Duke. I thought these schools played basketball.   Coming to you live from the Bronx and Yankee Stadium on ABC at 3:30. Wait – there is a football bowl game, named after a clothing pattern, played between two traditional basketball schools in a baseball stadium. I am so confused.

Bowl 18 – Give me a break. Really. There is a bowl game called The Camping World Independence Bowl? Guess there is. It is on ESPN at 5:45 between Tulsa and Virginia Tech. Does one have to camp out in the parking lot?

Bowl 19 is the Foster Farms Bowl. Is there a bowl game for Adopted Farms? This 9:15 kickoff on ESPN is between UCLA and Nebraska. Note: Nebraska has a losing record. Not to mention Nebraska fans wear giant yellow, phallic symbols of corn on their heads.

December 28

Bowl 20 is the Northrop Grumman Military Bowl at 2:30 on ESPN between Pittsburg and Navy. This one might be worth watching. Go Navy.

Bowl 21 is the Quick Lane Bowl – as opposed to the Slow Lane Bowl? This game is between Central Michigan and Minnesota at five o’clock on ESPN2.

December 29

Bowl 22 is Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl played between California and Air Force on ESPN at 2:00. Doesn’t Lockheed Martin make air craft?

Bowl 23 – In The Russell Athletic Bowl coming to us live from Florida at 5:30 on ESPN our teams are North Carolina and Baylor. Does Baylor get to wear one of its 10 variations of NIKE uniforms or is that a conflict of interest?

Baylor Band

Bowl 24 is The NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl between Nevada and Colorado State at 7:30 on Campus Insiders. Campus Insiders? That is what the schedule says. I think the ESPN people have been puffing in Colorado.

Bowl 25 is the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl at 9:00 between LSU and Texas Tech on ESPN. Goodie this is between a team I love and a team I do not love.

Billy Cannon 8.10.2014 2014-08-10 005 (600x800)Tech (800x600)

December 30 – OMG – there are five more of these contests before we ever get to the next group.

Bowl 26 is The Birmingham Bowl at noon on ESPN between Auburn and Memphis. I wonder if Uncle Will Muschamp’s head will explode during this game prior to him becoming a Game Cock – which just adds more adjectives to describe Coach Articulate.

Bowl 27 is the Belk Bowl at 3:30 on ESPN (who else?) between North Carolina State and Mississippi State. What is the Belk Bowl?

Bowl 28 – The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. OK I must watch because this game is the Fighting Texas Aggies and Louisville. Mercy – talk about The 12th Man in action. We just might get to see somebody called out of the stands to suit up for this one. This bowl could be named so many things. How about “The We Mortgaged Kyle Field Renovations through Franklin American Bowl?” How about “The Ernest Hemmingway – A Farewell to Arms Bowl?” Oh hell, let’s just call it the Mucinex Bowl and expectorate and cough and Gig ‘Em Aggies. BTHO Louisville.

Corps (800x600)

BTHO

BTHO Louisville

Bowl 29 – The Holiday Bowl between USC and Wisconsin in San Diego offers a vacation to the Badgers at 10:30 on ESPN and sleep for me.

And that takes us to December 31 – New Year’s Eve when finally there will be some teams and games worth watching.

Our winners of this round are:

ABC – 2

CBS – 1

ESPN2 – 1

ESPN – 15

Corporate/Military Sponsors – 19

Nike – TBD

Adidas – TBD

Under Armor – Maybe one team

Russell Athletic – Maybe

Campus Insiders – Who? What?

Thursday, December 17, 2015 – I Must Take a Powder and Take to My Bed

Yesterday’s news from Aggieland is enough to send all Aggies into WTF is Going On Land. Kyler Murray announces he is leaving too! Coach Sumlin sent him home to think about it, but that probably means he is getting his luggage to move on.  As the Aggies say “Highway 6 runs both ways.”

And if you think that is bad. I received an email yesterday saying “there will be no desserts at the Coach Gary Blair’s women’s basketball luncheon today.”

Pre Season All SEC pick, Texas A&M women’s basketball player – Courtney Walker? Can you throw a football like you can pass a basketball?

Where are my salts?

Oh yes, Happy Birthday, DeeWee.

Who watched the Republican Debate last night? The Democratic candidates debate this Saturday. See that is that liberal media programming the Democrats opposite the start of the college football bowl games. And on a weekend just before Christmas or ___________________(Fill in your holiday).

I found this photograph in “my papers” for my biographers. Of course my papers consist of multiple cardboard boxes filled with unorganized papers and pictures. I am going through the boxes prior to my biographers putting them in the Goodwill Store, or more probable, the trash or shredder.

image14 - Copy - Copy - Copy (587x800)

I took this photo of a man holding a protest sign on the steps of the United States Supreme Court Building. It was taken on my first trip to Washington D. C. Read the sign carefully. What were some of the issues then?

Here is what I find interesting. The year was 1983. That is correct – 1983. Throw in immigration issues of that day and fast forward to the present. Let’s see – Oh my! Why the issues are quite similar. Add foreign wars. Throw in a radical religious terrorist attack in Iraq – then referred to as “the hostage situation” And then add “emerging technology” and the world was on the cutting edge of gigantic leaps of cultural change in a forever changing world. The immigrants of that decade were Vietnamese and other Asian and Far Eastern countries escaping tyrannical rule.

Your assignment – pick a decade in United States/world history when these events and issues were NOT the issues of the day.

The more things change; the more they stay the same.

Thursday, December 3, 2015 – I Starting Decorating Last Night

Thursday, December 3, 2015 – I Started Decorating Last Night

I began decorating my living room last for whatever holiday you want to call it. I am calling it Christmas. You call yours whatever and I will not be offended. Therefore, if you don’t call your holiday, Christmas then don’t be offended by what I am calling mine.

Yes, I spent almost 25 minutes working on decorations last evening. That is a new record for decorating. Five of those minutes were trying to find Scotch tape, scissors and an exacto knife. I figure I will finish tonight. It should take a couple of hours or until the wine bottle is empty – whichever comes first.

So far so good. I have yet to draw blood with the sharp objects. I did manage to blow out a lamp socket. The sparks were pretty; however, brief and nothing caught fire.

There are no photos yet, since I have a few more decorations to design. Tonight comes the lights.

I doubt there will be any outside Christmas displays in my front for several reasons. One, I am not fond of large latex figures blowing around my front yard. Two, I am not fond of weird wire creatures with lights. Three, I not sure what the Home Owners Association rules are and would not want to be thrown in The Detention Pond.

So I am pretty sure the outside will not look like this.

Oh. Yes – Happy Birthday to BFF Troglodyte.
