November 18, 2014 – 2:42 AM November, 18, 1999

At 2:42 am this morning marked the 15th anniversary of the bonfire collapse on the Texas A&M campus killing twelve young people.

The following email was sent on the following day,Friday, 11/19/99, to his entire department at TEA. He is a retired United States Air Force Captain and Vietnam Veteran. I worked with him for years and never saw him express any emotion other than cynism or sarcasm.  He was on his way to Huntsville on the 18th when a bookcase fell from a pickup truck causing an accident. He was fine, but the car was not.  He and the car were towed to the Ford Dealer in College Station. He called his wife to come pick him up, but it would be a couple of hours before she could arrive.  He decided to get something to eat at the McDonalds and that is when he noticed the helicopters. He decided to walk over a take a look.  Here is his email.

“As I approached the site, you could not help but notice the 26 satellite trucks that surrounded the bonfire area on all sides. The media was EVERYWHERE – in the sky, around the site, and all over the parking lot. I walked up to take a look at the toppled pile of logs. They only way I can describe what I saw is to say that everything was surreal – for all the helicopters overhead, for all the trucks running their power-generators, for all the cranes and heavy equipment lifting the logs off the pile one-by-one – I noticed the silence.

No one was barking orders, no one appeared to be telling anyone what to do – it was if everyone knew what had to be done and they went about their job without a word.  I found it somewhat strange that there seemed to an absence of anyone over 25 years year old. Hundreds of young men and women – with makeshift hardhats of every color and description – lifted the heavy logs one-by-one and moved them to a clearing area.

With each log, their clothes got dirtier and dirtier, the number of cuts and bruses multiplied, and when their bodies said they needed a break, a fresh group of  young men and women would take their place – there was no shortage of volunteers.

Hundreds of students cycled between the campus and the bonfire area. There was nothing but silence. No one said hello; no one whispered; they would just stand on the sidelines, watch the logs slowly being removed and leave – it was as if they knew that they could not stand to look at it any longer without breaking down. At the local McDonalds across the street, students gathered and watched the TV coverage of the accident. No discussions, no comments, just silence.

It was a very moving experience. There is no question that the accident is a great tragedy, but I saw something else as well.  Throughout the ordeal, there was a tremendous sense of unity. Even the strongest guy there could not have lifted a log by himself and move it to the side alone – it took a team effort. It did not matter whether they were male or female, black or white, rich or poor, a football player, a squad member, a drill team member, or just a fan, they moved and acted as one.

Everyone who hoisted one of those heavy logs on their shoulders that day will remember the experience forever. So will those of us who stood on the sidelines.”

Yes, Keith, but it is because, We are the Aggies; the Aggies are We.

Monday, November 17, 2014 – College Footbal – Week 12

Monday, November 17, 2014 – College Football – Week 12

It is almost the end of the regular college football season. The number of teams who are hanging in the top hoping for the playoffs is getting smaller. So the first awards are the Good Bye Awards.

The Good Bye Award goes to Auburn who goes down to Georgia and is out of contention. Hey, you still have the Iron Bowl.

The Fight Song Award of Go U Northwestern for being 4-6 and yet beating Notre Dame. So we say Good Bye to Notre Dame too. Looks like it will be up to Miss Muffet again to bring home a National Championship Title for the school.

The Dam It All Up Award goes to the Oregon Beavers for upsetting Arizona State. So we say Good Bye to Arizona State. How’s the softball team looking this year?

The Orange Rising Award goes to THE University of Texas for looking very Strong! Thanksgiving just got a bit more interesting.

The Baconator or Just a Matter of Time Award goes to the Hogs of Arkansas for beating LSU. Sooey Pigs!

The Rally Award goes to Florida State for once again coming from behind against the Hurricanes of Miami.

The Award for Just Paddling Leisurely Along and playing a soft remaining schedule goes to the Ducks of Oregon.

The Crimson Tide Rising Award goes to Alabama, who will drown the Ducks and flood the Florida State swamps.

You ARE in Kansas Award, Toto goes to TCU. Thank goodness you realized you were at the University of Kansas, worst team in Big 12, and somehow escaped by four points. That will not win any Selection Committee votes.

The I Told You So Award goes to me for saying early on that Uncle Will Muschamp would not make it at Florida. CHOMP!

And to the Aggies of Texas A&M, I award the What the Hell? When it is fourth down and one yard to make it first down and goal or it is fourth down and two to score, why in the hell did you roll right and throw back left? Only Peyton Manning and Tom Brady can do that.  What dumbass called that play?

The only thing worse that poor play calling by the Aggies was the announcing team of Brat Mushburger and Jesse Palmer. At least Palmer quit saying “When I was Florida…”  Really, it is the SEC versus all the rest, and yet, we have to deal with those two clowns? Boo.

Friday, November 14, 2014

There are going to be some cold balls tomorrow.  Footballs that it is. TCU is in Lawrence, Kansas.Texas Tech will be flinging tortillas at OU in Lubbock. And THE University of Texas will be freezing, possibly quite literally, in Stillwater against Oklahoma State. Good thing BEVO is a steer and has nothing to freeze off. Baylor will be sitting by the fire and watching and praying for another Big 12 Championship even if they have to share. The 2:30 game between # 1 Mississippi State Bulldogs and #4 Alabama could pose to be another game for the ages.  A really pissed off Auburn plays UGA in Athens at 6:15 pm. At 6:30 will The Lady or The Tiger be behind the door at Kyle Field? The Aggies can continue to play spoiler by defeating Missouri. And at 7:00 LSU tries to bring home the bacon in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  All of these games will be played in cold and inclement weather that could create all kinds of strange things. The only game that apparently will have good weather is Florida State and Miami. I hope there is a Category 5 Hurricane on the field in Sun LIfe Stadium in Miami. BTHO Missouri.

Monday, November 10, 2014 – College Football – Week Eleven

Who is the most famous alumni from The University of Tennessee at Martin? And my apologies for not recognizing UTM by its official name last Friday and referring to it as UTennessee @ Somewhere. Also, it seems the Prefixes is not the mascot of Presbyterian. The mascot is the Blue Hose. The Presbyterian Blue Hose. I am not certain if this refers to a legging or stocking, or a garden tool or some type of religious undergarment worn like other religious beliefs. Nevertheless, Ole Miss hosed them 48-0.

Prior to Monday, College Football Awards – Week Eleven, you probably do not get the SEC network. If you did and watched it Saturday morning, you know there was a segment from Ruffino’s in Baton Rouge showing how to make gumbo. As all gumbo recipes begin, “First you make a roux.” Then you add the “gumbo Trinity” of onions, bell pepper and celery. After that it got very generic. For example, “Then you add your spices.” This is because no one who makes gumbo is going to give every detail. It is our secret. But what do you have Longhorn Network that is informative, informational and practical? But the Longhorns win the first award today. It is

The Our State is Better in Football Than Your State Award goes To THE University of Texas for beginning to look like a Texas team and not like Westlake High School against the University of West Virginia! TCU also receives a share of this award for winning against K-State.

In The Purple Reign Bowl, TCU rained Princely on K-State to strengthening the chances of the Big 12 Championship belonging to a school in state of Texas.

Baylor receives the First Win in Norman Award and also strengthening the in state chances for the Big 12 Championship.

Our Lady of the Desert Award is presented to Notre Dame for drying up ND’s championship chances. Arizona Sun Devils! You should have brought an exorcist with you.

The Meteorological Phases of the Moon Award goes to LSU. You should know The TIDE always rises during the full moon.

The What’s The Point Award goes to the LSU field goal kicker for the field goal in the game with a minute left against Alabama giving LSU the lead.

The What Were You Thinking Award goes to the LSU kick off kicker for kicking the ball out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff and thus giving Alabama an opportunity to score and tie the game in regulation and then go on to win in OT.

The Leon Lett Award goes to Utah for dropping the football short of the goal line…

While The Almost as Good As The Play* – goes to the Oregon player for picking up the dropped ball in the end zone and then to all eleven Oregon players for running the entire length of the field to score and tie the score, while the Utes celebrated prematurely on their sideline. *The Play refers to a last-second kickoff return during a college football game between the University of California Golden Bears and the Stanford Cardinal (remember it is a color, not bird) on Saturday, November 20, 1982.

And now to The Fighting Texas Aggies I proudly award the following awards:

To the true freshman Aggie Quarterback, Kyle Allen, I give the “Stay Calm and Carry on with Ice in Your Veins” Award.

The Awe Burn Your Chances for taking out the Tigers Final Four contention.

The Awe Burn The Clock Award for holding on to the end.

The Red-Headed Step Child Award goes to Texas A&M because Auburn will not want to bring this game out in public.

The Ruling on The Field is Confirmed! Aggie Ball! Award.

The Ruling on The Field is Confirmed! Aggie Ball! Award. Yes, they get two of the same awards for the two late fumble recoveries.

And while Bo Jackson was a great dual sport athlete and is a super person, the Aggies win the Bo Don’t Know Texas A&M! Award.

Pat Summit graduated from The University of Tennessee at Martin.

Friday, November 7, 2014 – Life of 3.14….

Friday, November 7, 2014 – Life of 3.14….

I did not read nor see the movie called Life of Pi. I know it is about a boy and tiger who somehow wind up in boat together.  The Aggies are in the same boat except there are three tigers in the boat. There is a tiger-in-waiting for the next three Saturdays. I am pretty sure, we have no paddles and will be up the creek without one for each of the next Saturdays. But who knows? This Saturday TV football begins with Baylor and OU at 11:00 am.  Not as big a game as it once was, but there is still much on the line. Ole Miss plays a school named after a prefix called PRE. I have not found the exact name of the cupcake school, but Ole Miss needs it to lick their wounds, literally, from last week. The # 1 school, Mississippi State, also has a cupcake game against the University of Tennessee at Middle Some Place. (UTM) The 2:30 time slot looks more interesting. We have the Texas Longhorns vs West Virginia, Texas A&M at Auburn and the Irish of Notre Dame against Arizona State.  With the exception of the last game, the two previously mentioned could be over before the end of the half. The game that could determine a chunk of the Big 12 kicks off at 6:30 pm between K-State and TCU – The Purple Reign Game.  Fear the Frog and remember, keep the Big 12 Championship in Texas. Thirty minutes after that kickoff, flip over to Baton Rouge in Death Valley as the LSU Tigers hold Alabama’s future in their hands. And way out West, the Utah Utes (not to be confused with “the two utes”, from My Cousin Vinny) can really fumble up the standings of the committee, with a win over Oregon. And Florida State – you just get a big YUK. Granted it is not a Cavalier attitude (get it?) The Seminoles play the Cavaliers of Virginia.  Regardless of being in the eye of the tigers, we are the Aggies. BTHO Auburn!

Thursday, November 6, 2014 – Two Pics from Alaska

Thursday, November 6, 2014 – Two Pics from Alaska

Here’s What I am Thinking is connected to a blog called Lens Cap and @Mamaflybox follows it Twitter. Lens Cap posts beautiful photographs. Yesterday he posted a leaf.  So today I post a picture I took of some leaves in Soldotna, Alaska. I hope he sees it.

 Fall (800x530)

Hopefully, Mamaflybox, who posts some pretty awesome pictures of fly fishing, or someone else can help with this.

Take a look at the picture I took of this sign.

Sign (800x530)

It is located on the Ship Creek that runs through Anchorage. I am guessing it has something to do with fly fishing and the combat fishing done during the season, but have no clue. But my questions are: How did the number of 28 seconds come about? What are they waiting for? Who monitors it? What if one does not wait 28 seconds? Does one receive a fine and/or penalty?

Just wondering.

Wednesday, November 5, 2014 – PETA, the Aggies and the Elephant

Wednesday, November 5, 2014 – PETA, the Aggies and the Elephant

First of all I am still trying to picture an Aggie chapter of PETA, but they seem to make the news quite frequently.

Recently, prior to the Alabama/Texas A&M elephant whipping of a football game, PETA protested the 92 year old A&M tradition of Elephant Walk. Elephant Walk is a tradition where graduating seniors walk a path like elephants that are going to their dying grounds symbolizing that they, the students, will soon be leaving campus as a student. Look, I do not make up this stuff so, no comments from The Peanut Gallery.  It seems PETA protested the appearance of a live elephant at the traditional Elephant Walk.  The few times I recall seeing it (graduate students do not participate) I never remember seeing an elephant.  Rather, it was a long line of young people, having a good time, walking through campus with a forearm swinging in front of their face resembling the trunk of an elephant. I wonder if PETA has seen the elephant on the local Furniture Shack commercial. Now that’s scary and I do not only refer to the elephant in the commercial.

And then there are the chickens. Shortly after I moved to the cultural capital of the Brazos Valley, an 18 wheeler carrying over 5000 chickens over turned near Highway 6 and Highway 21. If you have been to my house, you know that is two exits north going toward, or hopefully coming from, Hearne. PETA wants to place a 10 foot granite monument and memorial to the chickens that died in the crash. Check out the proposed monument with a single, but ethical, mouse click.

http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/PETAs-Chicken-Tombstone-Bid-Hits-Roadblock-278730311.html

While you are digesting the monument, think about this. It really makes one wonder why and how the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) even has a rule on the books that says “TxDOT’s rules do not allow memorials for animals on highway rights of way.” Aren’t humans animals?

Looks like I brought The Weird with me from Austin. At least to Highway 6 and Highway 21. Perhaps the city of Bryan will build a Chick-Filet.
