Saturday, July 07, 2018 – CFWS – Cornhole Royalty or Snarky Friday Delayed

Saturday, July 07, 2018 – CFWS – Cornhole Royalty or Snarky Friday Delayed

Me: So, Doctor. There is nothing that can be done for CFWS?

Doctor: I’m afraid not. I see many patients this time of year who suffer from College Football Withdrawal Symptom (CFWD.) One must wait it out until August when it goes away. In the meantime, I can only suggest you watch something from previous years on TV. That Longhorn Network has many contests from previous years since that is all THE University has. Or you find something else to tide you over.

Therefore I returned home and after an extensive search of every sports channel I subscribed to and I discovered a sport to hold me over until August. CORNHOLE!

Initially, I thought the sport was called Corn Row, but I later found out that corn row refers to an ethnic hair style.

In cornhole individual contestants or a team of two underhandedly toss four bags filled with corn kernels. No, the kernels are not cooked. Contestants, across a distance of 27 feet toss the bag in an attempt to drop the bag into a hole cut out of a board that is elevated about six inches from the floor to form an incline. Three points are awarded if the bag goes into the hole and one point if the bag lands on the inclined board. First player or team to reach 21 wins that round.

There were several attributes that drew me to this sport. One – I always enjoy a sport where one can hold their beer and cigarette in one hand and toss an object with the other. Similar to Frisbee golf. Except cornhole is even better than Frisbee golf because it can be played indoors.

Some of the rules of the game I liked were: Decide who tosses first – usually the ugliest or drunkest. I also liked: Clear debris from boards – especially dog poop and cornhole is no place for children as they tend to run onto the playing area. A nice corn bag to the head usually acts as a deterrent.

A second attribute that attracted me to cornhole was: People actually do this? My mama used to make us bean bags all the time when we were little. We threw bean bags into all kinds of holes and at each other and the dog and the cat. Too bad none of us thought to put college logos or paint beer advertising on the board and sell it to whoever is making money now.

But the third and biggest attribute that made me like cornhole was the Royalty. The National Cornhole Championships were held in West Virginia last year. Yes, West Virginia, there is a National Cornhole Championship. Remember, this is the state that burns old sofas when West Virginia U wins football games.

There is even a governing organization. It is the American Cornhole Organization, with a podcast called Talking American Cornhole Organization or TACO. https://americancornhole.com/

At the National Cornhole Championship both a King and Queen are crowned. Just think – BJ, JP, Dale – You could be the Queen of the Cornhole. http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=11244789

And if things could not get better – the 2018 Cornhole Championship will be held July 24 through July 28 in Montgomery, Alabama. There is still time to register! You could be Queen of Largest Cornhole Party Ever and even be on TACO.

Monday, July 2, 2018 – Is It Time for College Football Yet?

Monday, July 2, 2018 – Is It Time for College Football Yet?

Good Grief, Charlie Brown! It is already July 2. I think missed the final days of June.

What have we missed? Arkansas Hogs got roasted in the College World Series by Oregon State Beavers. What a way to lose it too! One out away from winning the CWS and you miss the foul ball. That memory is going to take a long time to go away.

Nevertheless, the end of the CWS just means one yard closer to college football season. I can’t wait.

Did you see where former LSU Coach Les Miles’ son is transferring from Nebraska to Texas A&M? He will be eligible next season. He is a fullback. A FULLBACK at Texas A&M?

I have not yet purchased the Texas bible of football – Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. I shall have it by tomorrow. I understand that Texas A&M Head Football Coach, Jimbo Fisher, is on the cover. Flashback: Last year THE University of Texas HC, Tom Herman, on the cover was no advantage.

The story in Texas Football supposedly says when Jimbo saw the previous head coach’s office at Texas A&M he said something like “Good God! It looks like a damn night club in here. I’m not moving in until remodeled.” I hope there are Before and After pictures.

I must stop and go to store to get ready for the Fourth of July. I’ll buy hot dogs, but no buns! The “no buns” story is one to be told with alcohol and hot dogs. And buns.

However, before I stop and go shop, I would like to make this public. On Friday June 20, 2018, I received $20, cash on the barrel head, from one Mr. J. Hawkins. I believe this is Alabama within the spread over Texas A&M. Is that correct?

I would like see Mr. Hawkins’ $20 and raise him a bottle of wine on Texas A&M within the spread and raise our Emergency Room Deductible.

Wednesday, June 27, 2018 – My Books. My Reading List. My Summer Project.

Wednesday, June 27, 2018 – My Books My Reading List My Summer Project

On June 21, I reached 50. My goal is 60 by August 31.

I want to see how many of the 100 Great Reads I can read.

http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/home/

This is quite doable. When the list was released in May I could check off 45 as having read. Thank you, but do not be impressed. Remember I have lots of sheepskins on the wall and all of them are liberal arts related. That is what liberal arts majors do – we read.

With my number of books rating (five books = excellent and 1 = Just OK) here are the five I read in June.

Bless Me, Ultima – Rudolfo Anaya – 4 Books. Good story and good insight into Chicano culture.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams – 5 Books – Loved it. An imagination stretched, but really funny.

The Outsiders – S. E. Hinton – 4 books. Should be read by every teenager and every adult who was once a teenager.

Thing Fall Apart – Chinua Achebe – 1 Book. Even though I did not care for this book, it does give insight into precolonial Africa.

Where the Red Fern Grows – Wilson Rawls – 5 books. A boy, two dogs, coon hunting and the South – what more can you ask for? I cried reading the book; cannot imagine the movie. If you ever loved your dog, you will cry too.

So what’s on the list for July?

A Separate Peace by John Knowles

The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut

White Teeth by Zadie Smith

Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift

Ready Player One – Ernest Cline

Even if you are not as ambitious as I, find a book on the list and go escape from the world for a while. You can escape to any time period, any culture or even any galaxy with tales of love, passion and justice. Have I read a favorite of yours, yet?

Tuesday, June 12, 2018 – Star Trek and the CWS From The Bridge

Tuesday, June 12, 2018 – Star Trek and the CWS From The Bridge

Captain’s Log – Star Date – 06.12.2018 – From the bridge of the USS My House

It arrived this morning! A piece of furniture that can charge my cell phone, tablet and laptop – all at the same time. Can you believe – furniture that plugs into the wall. It has a wireless switch over in the event the electricity goes out.

Please know that between this high tech love seat and my new high tech bed that I may never leave my house again. Also because after purchasing these two items I have no funds to go anywhere.

This weekend, from one of these vantage points, I will watch the College World Series – also known as The SEC Conference versus the Big 12 Conference with a few other schools thrown in to round out the bracket.

So who will I root, root, root for this weekend from reclines of the techno furniture? This is the final series I would like to see. THE University of Texas versus Mississippi State! If the Texas Aggies are not playing, then I’m going with the other SEC team of maroon and white and with a dog mascot. GO STATE!

Friday, June 8, 2018 – Snarky Friday and Check for Understanding

Friday, June 8, 2018 – Snarky Friday and Check for Understanding

I know Snarky Friday is usually reserved for me commenting on Saturday college football, but today I’m going to snark on Betsy DeVos – also known as Betsy Devoucher, the Secretary of Education.

Dear Betsy,

Since you have no education credentials or public school background, may I suggest you Google Madeline Hunter, Patron Saint of Instructional Delivery Methods?

As one tries to educate the unwashed masses, Dr. Hunter (note she is a Doctor of Education, like I am) notes that it is imperative to check for understanding. This means check to see if those you are trying to instruct understand the concept you are teaching.

Therefore, I am checking for understanding on this School Safety Commission you are leading. I currently understand that the group will not study guns in schools. You were quoted as saying “you were studying school safety issues, but guns were not part of the study.”

As of May 25, there have been 21 school shootings since January of this year. What are you and your commission studying about schools safety? Food fights in the cafeteria? Water balloons on the playground?

Here’s what I’m thinking. Mrs. DeVos, as always you are way off target on the entire educational process, but you shot yourself in the foot with this one.

Wednesday, June 6, 2018 – D Day and 101 Feet

Wednesday, June 6, 2018 – D Day and 101 Feet

On June 6, 1944, Lt. Colonel James Earl Rudder led a Battalion of Army Rangers up a cliff of 101 feet under heavy German machine gun fire. Their objective was to take Point du Hoc – a large promontory point separating Omaha and Utah Beaches. At the top of the cliff were six captured French 155mm artillery pieces sitting in open pits and manned by German sharpshooters and machine gun operators.

You can read the details of this crazy and almost suicidal scale straight up a cliff. https://sofrep.com

Rudder and the Rangers captured the artillery which allowed those storming Omaha and Utah Beaches.

How tall is 101 feet? Rudder Tower on the campus of Texas A&M University, named for General Earl Rudder is 101 feet tall.

Tuesday, May 29, 2018 – Calling All Bibliophiles and Especially Librarians, Literature and History Teachers.

Get those readers on and the bifocals focusing. Activate those library cards! It is time for the Great American Read!

http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/home/

The Late Buddy T. Cat.

On May 22, PBS showed the first of an eight-part series exploring and celebrating the power of reading. The Great American Read is 100 best-loved novels chosen in a national survey. It explores what these 100 books say about our great diversity and the human experience we share.

The genres displayed are as varied as readers are. The books are children’s and young adult books, science fiction novels, dystopian worlds, banned books, Pulitzer Prize winners, books by women who had to use their initials to get published, the classics you read in high school and college and just about every book you meant to read at some point.

These are the books that made a significant difference in your life. One is urged to reread some of the books based when you read it high school or college and compare to what you know and have experienced now.

And we get to vote on our favorites. While one only gets to vote once per day, you can vote for as many books as you desire until the end of summer. The finale will air with the number one selected book.

You can also download the list and check those you have read and determine those you will read next.

I thought I was pretty well read, but I have only read 45 of the books listed. I bought five on the list today. My goal is have read 50% of the list by the end of summer. Hint: Start with the juvenile fiction; they are short.

I have already selected the book that I think will be the most powerful book on the list. I am not giving the title, because I have more to read, but unless my bookmarks get blown away, I have chosen my book.

And before I close this chapter, let me rant momentarily.

Whoever thought Fifty Shade of Grey should be on this list should have to read War and Peace twice for punishment. Tell me how this POS and waste of trees made the list and The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck did not!

Happy Reading.

Friday, May 25, 2018 – Friday Musings

I am so glad I took that CPR and stop the bleeding class. (See yesterday) Unfortunately, one cannot administer self CPR. I needed to do so last evening with the Texas Aggies baseball team and the Houston Rockets. Both games were thrillers, but the Ags and Rockets pulled out victories. The Rockets’ victory may have been a pyrrhic one. Chris Paul grabbing his hamstring was not good.

Also, in the unfortunate world of sports, I was not able to stop the bleeding the Texas Aggie softball game against Florida.

The Aggies led 4-2 going into the Florida bottom of the ninth and WALK IN the winning run. I would rather lose by the run rule. Oh well, new day, new opportunity.

There may not be much SEC baseball or Super Regional Softball in the Alabama or Florida this weekend. There is a 90% chance a tropical storm this weekend.

In other news you don’t care about, I bought a new bed and mattress. It has an adjustable base. That means one can raise the head and/or the feet. Doesn’t adjustable base sound better than “oh, like a hospital bed” as my family described it.

It also features head/neck, lumbar and leg massage – not like that cheap motel massaging bed that used to cost a quarter. The bed comes with a remote control and is wireless. I love it and it truly has made a difference in a restful sleep. However, here is an issue.

The other night I am blissfully asleep when Peach the cat jumps into the bed and hits the remote. The bed starts vibrating and I don’t know if Texas is having a fracking earthquake or I am about to be swallowed into a sink hole. I wake and of course cannot find the damn remote. Meanwhile the cat is asleep at the end of the bed enjoying a massage.

Of course, it is Memorial Day weekend. Please remember the sacrifice of those who served and especially those who gave the greatest sacrifice.

BTHO FLORIDA! And BTHO TBD. However, I am afraid there may be a Tiger waiting. A Tiger with purple and gold stripes.
