Thursday, June 16, 2016 – Golf, Heat and Snakes (or other reptilian or amphibious water creatures.)

More Than a Game 2013 2013-11-11 005 (800x600)

If you can’t stand the heat, then get off of the golf course. If you are going to play golf in Texas one must learn to play in the heat. First of all, it is not that hot in Texas. It is still only June with temperatures in the low 90’s and the heat index around 100. We still have July and August when the temperature is around 100 degrees at 8:00 in the morning and the index is around 120 degrees around 10 PM at night.

Summer in Texas was part of the Hell Deal – you know when God kicked Lucifer out of Heaven? God said “Look, you can have Hell or Texas.” So the devil took Hell because it was too hot in Texas in July and August.

Seriously pay attention to the heat. Know how to prepare – hydrate, hydrate and hydrate. Pay attention to your body.

Other safety tips concern lost golf balls in hazards. Golf hazards are those places known to golfers as “where the monkeys have coitus.” It includes, but is not limited to water, weeds, tall grass, trees, wooded areas, a person’s yard or porch, and the next fairway.

Here’s what I’m thinking about lost golf balls in locations when I cannot see it upon first look. FORGET IT! See, my insurance deductible for a snake bite is $50 for an ER visit. Golf balls are only $25.00 a box. Heck, even Titleist golf balls are around $50. My insurance does not cover trauma and new underwear should I even see a snake. I know my insurance does not cover trauma and needed counseling should an alligator or some other Godzilla creature leap at me. I will take the penalty strokes.

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 – Wednesday Golf and Yu So Yung

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 – Wednesday Golf and Yu So Yung

Start: 8:30 AM Finish: 12: 20 PM

Today my inner Korean golfer showed up to play. Her name is Yu So Yung. Her evil twin sister, Yu So Suk usually shows up. I had a gross score of 101. With my handicap and the game of the today I was leading with an 84 with one group still out when I left.

Now lest you think I am a good golfer, there are several things you should know. For example, most of the women I play with at the Briarcrest CC are charter members. Charter like in Mayflower Charter because that is how old they are. So I gained an advantaged when two of the foursome in front dropped out of play on Hole 13 due to the heat. The remaining two dropped out of play on Hole 15.

My group was able to play the entire 18, but three of them were so fatigued by Hole 14 it caused them to make poor strokes.

As I mentioned one group was behind mine. I am not certain of their status. They may have all dropped out. They may “have dropped dead on the golf course.”

Meanwhile, I am very hydrated, accustomed to playing in the heat; and in such great shape (thank you Krystal), that Yu So Yung is playing every hole. And I still have gas in the tank.

My recommendation for being in the lead when playing golf is this.

One should play with old, out of shape women who have to drop out at various holes of play. If you are one of the few who is still playing at Hole 18, then you might get to be the leader.

Golf pairings are who you are assigned to play with during that round. I am not sure of the criteria used for golf pairings, but here’s what I’m thinking. I am pretty sure one of them for this group is “at least one person in each foursome must know CPR and/or has a medical background.”

Tuesday, June 14, 2016 – Vexillology – Flag Day

Tuesday, June 14, 2016 – Vexillology – Flag Day

Good morning Boys and Girls. Our vocabulary word for today is “vexillology.” It is a noun that means – the study of flags.

Today is Flag Day. Your homework assignment is to study this one. I like it.

The AP version of this assignment is to locate all of the episodes of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon (and Amy) record his internet hit series Fun With Flags and post them to my timeline.

Meanwhile I am going to study the tiny little flags that sit on poles that rest in 4.25 inch diameter holes on some pretty green grass. There are eighteen of them.

Could you have at least waited until the people were identified before you begin taking sides, assigning blame, politicizing and Bible tweeting about the Orlando tragedy? Both of them. What happened to “love one another?”

The song, While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was written by George Harrison and Paul McCartney. It is on The White Album. However, for today I chose this soul filled version by Carlos Santana. The lyrics seem so profound today.

It was supposed to be about baseball today… but baseball is just a game.

Tears, hope and peace.

Friday, June 10, 2016 – Truckin’ Frogs

Friday, June 10, 2016 – Truckin’ – Yes indeed yesterday’s song was Truckin’ by The Grateful Dead. What along strange trip it’s been! Deadheads recognized Mountain View and tie-dyed Bears T-shirt. Thank goodness there are no photographs and memories are only told late at night among close friends.

But this is Snarky Friday so our song for today is the TCU Fight song.

Frog went a courtin’ and he did ride, uh-huh

Frog went a courtin’ and he did ride, uh-huh

Frog went a courtin’ and he did ride

With a sword and a pistol by his side, uh-huh uh-huh, oh yeah.

He rode right up to Miss Reveille’s door, uh-huh

He rode right up to Miss Reveille’s door, uh-huh

He rode right up to Miss Reveille’s door, uh-huh

Gave three loud raps, and a very big roar, uh-huh uh-huh, oh yeah.

He said, “Miss Rev, will you marry me? uh-huh

He said, “Miss Rev, will you marry me? uh-huh

He said, “Miss Rev, will you marry me?

And oh so happy we will be, uh-huh uh-huh, oh yeah.

And this boys and girls is when Reveille jumped on and squashed the Frog.

Welcome to Blue Bell Park, Froggies.

Thursday, June 9, 2016 – What a Long Strange Day It Has Been

Sorry for no HWIT today. It was just one of those days. You know the kind when

Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurres to me What a long, strange trip it’s been.

Some days are just like that. Name that tune. And what group sang it?  Tune in tomorrow for the answers. Thank goodness there are no pictures from the concerts, but I still have the tie-dyed Bear T-shirt from Mountain View, California – their home turf.

Wednesday, June 8, 2016 – Quote(s) of the Day – Hello Dolly

In a recent interview with CNN Money, Dolly Parton offered her own assessment of North Carolina’s anti-LGBTQ “Bathroom Bill.”

“I think everybody should be treated with respect,” the country music star noted. “I don’t judge people, and I try not to get too caught up in the controversy of things. I hope that everybody gets a chance to be who and what they are.

“I just know if I have to pee, I’m going to pee,” she continued. “I don’t care where it’s going to be.”

Tuesday, June 7, 2016 – Comity

Tuesday, June 7, 2016 – Comity

Good morning, boys and girls. Our word for the day is “comity.” It is a noun that means mutual courtesy or civility. It is also used as a “comity of nations” or a courtesy between nations, as in respect shown by one country for the laws, judicial decisions and institutions of another.

Comity was first used in Dante Alighieri’s (1265-1321) The Divine Comedy. The first part of The Divine Comedy is called The Inferno (Italian for Hell). It is an allegory telling of the journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. In the poem Hell is depicted as nine circles of suffering located within the Earth and who is doomed to live in the various circles of Hell.

Comity is obviously not a word that is in Donald Trump’s vocabulary or understanding. FYI – The politicians are located in level eight of Hell.

Monday, June 6, 2016 – The Frogs from TCU are Hoping and Hopping

Monday, June 6, 2016 – The Frogs from TCU are Hoping and Hopping

That is correct. The TC PHEW horn frogs won the Fort Worth Regional baseball tournament. This means the Texas Aggies are waiting for you to take Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park this week. The bubbles will be waiting for you. And so will our Aggie memories from last year. So here’s to hoping, hopping and WHOOPING. BTHO TCU!

In other sports news I see where a blogger for Kansas (rock, chalk Jayhawk) wants The Big 12 to remove Baylor from the conference for the recent activity with the football team. Do you even play football, Kansas? I thought you only had a basketball team – a men’s team at that. Removing BU from the Big 12 will do what? I am not taking up for Baylor by any means. But it also serves no purpose for others to kick them when they are down. Especially since you bring nothing to the Big 12 yourself.

I am done. Over and out and off to the golf course. Hasta la manana.

Saturday, June 4, 2016 – Sad Day in Sports – One Classy Organization – And Legends.

From The Bryan Eagle By TRAVIS L. BROWN The Eagle

“All I could do is sit and look at it because, first of all, I couldn’t believe that there was an organization classy enough to do that for us,” Minnesota infielder Micah Coffey said.

When the Minnesota baseball team arrived at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park on Friday for their NCAA tournament opener against Wake Forest, they were met with a special surprise.

Texas A&M staff members placed a new on-deck mat just outside the third base dugout with a large No. 25 filling the middle of the circle — the number of Minnesota pitching coach Todd Oakes. Oakes died May 26 after his third bout with leukemia. He was in his 18th year coaching for the Golden Gophers.

———— From Me

The families of baseball also mourn the passing of Vanderbilt pitcher Donny Everett. The sophomore – projected number one draft pick – drowned while fishing with his buddies on the eve of the Commodores’ NCAA regional opener.

Whether you liked him or hated him, he was The Greatest. Muhammed Ali was the greatest heavy weight boxer of the twentieth century.

Here’s to these three from the great philosopher of the twentieth century, Jimmy Buffet from The Last Mango in Paris.

I had to search my memories

As I looked into those eyes

Our lives change like the weather

But a legend never dies.
