Tuesday, June 21, 2016 – Another Hero of The Greatest Generation – Thank You for Your Service, Sir.
Four years ago this month I had the honor and privilege of being on an Honor Flight from Austin, Texas with 25 WWII Veterans. It was the maiden Honor Flight taking these heroes to see the memorial in their honor. Mr. Ray Halliburton was one of them.

Dr. Tom Matthews, Ray Halliburton and J.V. McClananhan. The Boys from Luling, Texas .Photo by me.
Mr. Ray had never been to Washington D. C. I snapped this photo of him just as we arrived at the WWII Memorial.

Mr. Ray died on June 11 2016 at age 91 years. His obituary follows. It is interesting. However, I encourage you to click on the link at the end. It is a link to a Smithsonian Article published in January 2016 about him. You can read his words about the sacrifice he and all veterans make for us daily.
From the Gonzales Paper – Ray Halliburton, of Luling, died June 11, in Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio. He was born November 14, 1924. In 1944 he was drafted into the US Army and went to basic training at Camp Walters, in Mineral Wells. He was a Corporal when he went ashore in France in July 1944, one month after D-day. He was a member of K Company, Third Battalion, Tenth Infantry Regiment, Fifth Infantry “Red Diamond” Division, in Patton’s Third Army.
He fought three months of fierce combat across 500 miles and had risen to staff sergeant and squad leader. He was 20 years old. He was captured on December 5, 1944, just outside Saarbrucken, Germany, when his unit advanced ahead of the others. He was liberated by the Russian Army in 1945 from Lukenwalde. He was a farmer and rancher for most of his working life.
Thanks Ray. Glad I got to know. You made a difference to me and to the world we live in.

Monday, June 20, 2016 – Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner! Or Celebration Brunch
I won first place in my flight at the Inaugural Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) – Aggieland Chapter. First place winners receive an automatic bid to the state Semi-final Championship round. This year’s semi-finals are at The Hills in Lakeway, Texas on July 9.

I will be declining my advancement. I am going to play in the EWGA Shoot Out on the 24th of June. The Houston, Austin and Aggieland EWGA Chapters are holding a fun tournament to raise money to send young girls to nationals. This round will be played at Pine Forest in Bastrop. It is more fun to play when you help others.
Friday, June 17, 2016 – National Flip Flop Day
Today is National Flip Flop Day! Really, there is a day designated as National Flip Flop Day. I read it on the Internet so I know it is true. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/flip-flop-day/
So today’s HWIT is dedicated to my friend, JFP, the 1966 Homecoming Queen of Magnolia High School. She and I (like so many other intelligent women) share the same belief regarding footwear – If I can’t wear flip flops (tennis shoes in my case), and then I am not going.
National Flip Flop Day was founded by Tropical Smoothie. If a patron visits a Tropical Smoothie store wearing flip flips today he or she receives a free smoothie. The money is donated to Camp Sunshine – camp that provides support for children and their families with life threatening illnesses.
So flip on your flip flops and stroll along the beach or take a walk in the park and maybe get a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie. If you are not up for a walk in the Texas heat here is another thought.
Slide those flippy floppy shoes on, have a cocktail and dance around the room singing along with Jimmy. It’s 5:00 somewhere.

Jimmy Buffet – Austin, Texas, Circuit of the Americas; May 5, 2013 – photo by me.
“Blew out my flip flops; stepped on a pop top; cut my heel; had to hurry back home. But there’s booze in blender and soon it will render that frozen concoction that helps me hang on… Wasting away again in Margaritaville…” (Buffet, Jimmy)
I wonder if National Flip Flop Day coincides with National Podiatrist Day.
Enjoy the weekend. Happy Father’s Day!
Thursday, June 16, 2016 – Golf, Heat and Snakes (or other reptilian or amphibious water creatures.)

If you can’t stand the heat, then get off of the golf course. If you are going to play golf in Texas one must learn to play in the heat. First of all, it is not that hot in Texas. It is still only June with temperatures in the low 90’s and the heat index around 100. We still have July and August when the temperature is around 100 degrees at 8:00 in the morning and the index is around 120 degrees around 10 PM at night.
Summer in Texas was part of the Hell Deal – you know when God kicked Lucifer out of Heaven? God said “Look, you can have Hell or Texas.” So the devil took Hell because it was too hot in Texas in July and August.
Seriously pay attention to the heat. Know how to prepare – hydrate, hydrate and hydrate. Pay attention to your body.
Other safety tips concern lost golf balls in hazards. Golf hazards are those places known to golfers as “where the monkeys have coitus.” It includes, but is not limited to water, weeds, tall grass, trees, wooded areas, a person’s yard or porch, and the next fairway.
Here’s what I’m thinking about lost golf balls in locations when I cannot see it upon first look. FORGET IT! See, my insurance deductible for a snake bite is $50 for an ER visit. Golf balls are only $25.00 a box. Heck, even Titleist golf balls are around $50. My insurance does not cover trauma and new underwear should I even see a snake. I know my insurance does not cover trauma and needed counseling should an alligator or some other Godzilla creature leap at me. I will take the penalty strokes.
Wednesday, June 15, 2016 – Wednesday Golf and Yu So Yung
Start: 8:30 AM Finish: 12: 20 PM
Today my inner Korean golfer showed up to play. Her name is Yu So Yung. Her evil twin sister, Yu So Suk usually shows up. I had a gross score of 101. With my handicap and the game of the today I was leading with an 84 with one group still out when I left.
Now lest you think I am a good golfer, there are several things you should know. For example, most of the women I play with at the Briarcrest CC are charter members. Charter like in Mayflower Charter because that is how old they are. So I gained an advantaged when two of the foursome in front dropped out of play on Hole 13 due to the heat. The remaining two dropped out of play on Hole 15.
My group was able to play the entire 18, but three of them were so fatigued by Hole 14 it caused them to make poor strokes.
As I mentioned one group was behind mine. I am not certain of their status. They may have all dropped out. They may “have dropped dead on the golf course.”
Meanwhile, I am very hydrated, accustomed to playing in the heat; and in such great shape (thank you Krystal), that Yu So Yung is playing every hole. And I still have gas in the tank.

My recommendation for being in the lead when playing golf is this.
One should play with old, out of shape women who have to drop out at various holes of play. If you are one of the few who is still playing at Hole 18, then you might get to be the leader.
Golf pairings are who you are assigned to play with during that round. I am not sure of the criteria used for golf pairings, but here’s what I’m thinking. I am pretty sure one of them for this group is “at least one person in each foursome must know CPR and/or has a medical background.”

Tuesday, June 14, 2016 – Vexillology – Flag Day
Good morning Boys and Girls. Our vocabulary word for today is “vexillology.” It is a noun that means – the study of flags.
Today is Flag Day. Your homework assignment is to study this one. I like it.

Atrium at the George H. W. Bush Library – College Station, Texas. Photo by me.
The AP version of this assignment is to locate all of the episodes of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon (and Amy) record his internet hit series Fun With Flags and post them to my timeline.
Meanwhile I am going to study the tiny little flags that sit on poles that rest in 4.25 inch diameter holes on some pretty green grass. There are eighteen of them.
Monday, June 13, 2016 – It Was Supposed to be About Baseball Today, But Instead …While my guitar gently weeps…”

Could you have at least waited until the people were identified before you begin taking sides, assigning blame, politicizing and Bible tweeting about the Orlando tragedy? Both of them. What happened to “love one another?”
The song, While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was written by George Harrison and Paul McCartney. It is on The White Album. However, for today I chose this soul filled version by Carlos Santana. The lyrics seem so profound today.
It was supposed to be about baseball today… but baseball is just a game.
Tears, hope and peace.

Friday, June 10, 2016 – Truckin’ – Yes indeed yesterday’s song was Truckin’ by The Grateful Dead. What along strange trip it’s been! Deadheads recognized Mountain View and tie-dyed Bears T-shirt. Thank goodness there are no photographs and memories are only told late at night among close friends.
But this is Snarky Friday so our song for today is the TCU Fight song.
Frog went a courtin’ and he did ride, uh-huh
Frog went a courtin’ and he did ride, uh-huh
Frog went a courtin’ and he did ride
With a sword and a pistol by his side, uh-huh uh-huh, oh yeah.
He rode right up to Miss Reveille’s door, uh-huh
He rode right up to Miss Reveille’s door, uh-huh
He rode right up to Miss Reveille’s door, uh-huh
Gave three loud raps, and a very big roar, uh-huh uh-huh, oh yeah.
He said, “Miss Rev, will you marry me? uh-huh
He said, “Miss Rev, will you marry me? uh-huh
He said, “Miss Rev, will you marry me?
And oh so happy we will be, uh-huh uh-huh, oh yeah.
And this boys and girls is when Reveille jumped on and squashed the Frog.
Welcome to Blue Bell Park, Froggies.

Sorry for no HWIT today. It was just one of those days. You know the kind when
Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurres to me What a long, strange trip it’s been.
Some days are just like that. Name that tune. And what group sang it? Tune in tomorrow for the answers. Thank goodness there are no pictures from the concerts, but I still have the tie-dyed Bear T-shirt from Mountain View, California – their home turf.
