Wednesday, April 8, 2015 – GOLF – PAR 3

  1. Today was golf. I did very well. Not as well as Jack Nicklaus who, not only made, but predicted, a hole in one in the Master’s PAR Three Contest.
  2. The top story on the BCS news station tonight: “Concerns for game day parking for football games.”
  3. And so ends another NCAA Basketball season.

Tuesday, April 7, 2015 – 1946 World Series – The Mad Dash

Tuesday, April 7, 2015 – The Mad Dash

In case you did not see the comment from my sister…

Astros Win!!! Astros Win!!!! Opening Day Win! HB had never been on an airplane until that day in 1946. He never again saw the man from St. Louis with whom he shared the ticket and stayed at their home. (Can you imagine staying in a strangers’ home in this day and time.) But he and the gentleman kept up with each other the rest of their lives through phone calls and postal mail. Pat and I were in San Francisco during the 90’s and arranged, with the help of kids at home, to fly HB out there for a couple of weeks. We took him to a ball game….LA Dodgers vs the SF Giants. He put on his Astro cap and strutted around Giant stadium like he was one of the players. When I took him to make his funeral arrangements, you would have thought he was buying a new car. He knocked on all the caskets and when he finally decided on the one, asked the funeral director if he thought the t.v. reception would be good whereas he could watch his Astros. When I assured him that where he was going he could watch the Astros from above. He grinned from ear to ear and said “That’s right!!!” Play Ball, HB!!!!!

=========

Even though HB only saw the first two games of the series, the 1946 World Series would be historic. And I am sure he listened to every pitch on the radio.

Tuesday, October 15, 1946 at Sportsman’s Park (III) in St. Louis, Missouri

WP: Harry Brecheen (3–0)   LP: Bob Klinger (0–1)

The Cardinals led 3–1 in the eighth inning when Dom DiMaggio tied the game with a two-run double but was pulled from the game and Leon Culberson took his position in the center field. Enos Slaughter scored from first base on a play called the Mad Dash. As the runner started, Walker lined the ball to left-center field, where Culberson fielded the ball. As he threw a relay to shortstop Johnny Pesky, Slaughter rounded third base, ignored third base coach Mike González‘s stop sign, and continued for home plate.

The Mad Dash

What exactly happened when Pesky turned around is still a matter of contention. Some claim that Pesky, assuming that Slaughter would not be running home, checked Walker at first base instead of immediately firing home, while others contend that Pesky was so shocked to see Slaughter on his way to score that he had a mental lapse that accounted for the delay. Whatever the reason, the delay and a weak and rushed throw home allowed Slaughter to score just as Red Sox catcher Roy Partee caught it up the line from home plate.

The run put the Cardinals ahead 4–3 and proved to be the winning run.

  • This was the first World Series appearance for the Red Sox since 1918, and it would be their last appearance until 1967, when they would again lose to the Cardinals in seven games.
  • The World Series loss snapped the Red Sox’s record of winning their first five postseason series, a feat that would not be matched until the Florida Marlins did it 57 years later in the 2003 World Series.
  • Joe Cronin became the fourth manager to take two teams to the World Series (Pat Moran, Bill McKechnie, and Joe McCarthy were the first three) but was the first who did not win with either of them.
  • Several sources erroneously reported that Harry Walker hit a single allowing Enos Slaughter to score. It was officially scored a double.
  • This was the first World Series in which the final out in Game 7 came with the tying run on third base.[9]

Hall of Famers from those teams and that World Series are: Umpires Cal Hubbard and Al Barlick. For the Cardinals – Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst and Enos Slaughter.  Red Sox Hall of Famers are Manager, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr and the great Ted Williams. Fans in the Hall of Fame are: Honeyboy Duffey.

Monday, April 6, 2015 – Opening Day MLB

Monday, April 6, 2015 – Opening Day MLB

Take me out to the ballgame; take me out with crowd; buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks; I don’t care if we never get back; we will root, root for the home team; if they don’t win it’s a shame; cause it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out at the old ballgame.

Opening day of Major League Baseball.  My father, dear Honeyboy (HB), thought it should be a national holiday.  That day ranked right up there with the opening of deer season. I am pretty sure the reason MISD got that day off was during the years he was president of the school board.  Talk about your local control.

Granted, I am aware that last evening the St. Louis and Chicago Cubs played. But my father was a purist and did not believe opening day, or even baseball should be played under the lights.  However, he had no difficulty with the game being played indoors, when his beloved Houston Astros were less than an hour from his home and tickets were cheap.

But it is a special day and my memories of him and his love for baseball surface on opening day. As he aged and other memories faded into a distant past, there was always one story that never wavered and we, at least me, never tired of hearing.  It began with “Honeyboy, tell me the story about when you went to the World Series.” He would get that look on his face and you knew he was there and reliving it.  It went something like this:

We had just moved to Texas the year before. I was working at the sawmill. It was October 1946. The auditors from Houston had been at the sawmill all week looking at the books.  I had been real nervous because I was the bookkeeper.  But it all turned out good, and as they were leaving, one of them said, “Son, here are two tickets to the first two games to the World Series in St. Louis.  If you can get somebody to go with you, they are yours.”

I said, “Oh I can find somebody.” I ran to the commissary to show Cecil (Groves) and ask him to go with me. Cecil looked at the tickets and said, “Duff, these are for Sunday and Monday. Today is Friday. How will we get there in time?”

When I said we will fly, he turned me down because he was scared to fly. So I went home and told your mother, “I am going to the World Series.”

Course she had all kinds of objections. Things like – you are going to be gone almost a week. Or like I did not have a place to stay. I told her Mr. Henry OKed it and I would sleep outside the ballpark if necessary, but I was going to the World Series.

But she took me to the airport. (Hobby in Houston) I remember I almost missed my flight and there was only one seat left.

It turned out that he sat next to a man from St. Louis who had been in Houston all week on business.

We got to talking and he said “If you will share your extra tickets, you can stay at my house and we will go together.” So I stayed at his house. His wife drove us to the ballpark and picked us up. She even did my laundry so it would be clean when I got home.”

So who did you see play?

I saw the St. Louis Cardinals play the Boston Red Sox in the first two games of the 1946 World Series in Sportsman’s Park. The Boston Red Sox won game one 3 -2 in ten innings. But St. Louis won game two 3 to zero.

========

And wait until you hear about those games and the 1946 World Series itself. But that is for today.

Meanwhile take a look at the roster for the Boston Red Sox. That outfielder Ted Williams was pretty good, I understand.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/1946-roster.shtml#appearances::none

The St. Louis Rosters looks pretty good too.  Number six is named Stan Musial and there was a catcher named Joe Garagiola.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/STL/1946-roster.shtml

Right now I must choose some teams to follow this baseball season. Now I have not followed MLB in years, but I choose the four teams listed below to follow this year:

  • The San Diego Padres – Andrew Cashner (P) is from Conroe and a family friend. He is not pitching today while the Padres are playing the LA Dodgers. My father hated the Dodgers. I do not think he ever forgave them for the move to the West Coast.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals – Aside from the Houston Astros, my father’s favorite team. Probably had something to do with 1946 WS.
  • The Boston Red Sox – In spite of being in the American League, one of HB’s favorite teams. Again, probably had something to do with 1946 WS.
  • The Oakland Athletics, who play the Texas Rangers tonight. Sorry, RL, but I have been a closet A’s fan since the days of Rolle Fingers.

But I remember the rules for selecting teams to follow and to pull for.  As my father taught me  –  “Pull for any team that plays the New York Yankees.”

Batter Up! Play Ball!

Sunday, April 5, 2016 – My Easter Bonnet

Sunday, April 5, 2016 – My Easter Bonnet

Trivia – Who wrote the music and lyrics to The Easter Parade?

Let’ all sing…

In Your Easter bonnet with all the scotch upon it;

You’ll be the grandest lady when the Masters is played,

Oh I could write a sonnet about my Easter bonnet,

And of the girl I’m taking to the Easter Parade.

On the avenue, Fifth Avenue, the photographers will snap us,

And you’ll find that you’re in the rotogravure.

My Big A** Hat is now repurposed to be my Easter bonnet.

Hat Top (800x591) Font 2 (586x800)Hat Front (592x800)

Is this not the coolest hat ever? Kudos and creativity go to JP for making mine and the two others. Remember the theme for the Sweet Potato Queen weekend was Braveheart and/or Scotland. What better to represent Scotland than golf and scotch? Thank you JP so much for making them.

Don’t you just think Lynn Nobles will be just pea green with envy?

The trivia answer – Irving Berlin wrote the music and lyrics to The Easter Parade. Entertainment is my worst category in Trivia Crack and I knew this one.

Saturday, April 4, 2015 – The Easter Vigil

Saturday, April 4, 2015 – The Easter Vigil

It is Saturday. The Saturday before Easter Sunday.  The Saturday for the Easter Vigil.  I have not been to an Easter Vigil at a church in years.  I do not know if belief structures other than Catholic hold a vigil.

Here is what I recall when I did go. This is where you go to church on Saturday and wait for Jesus to arrive on Sunday. Evidently He arrives at sunrise because that is what time church bulletin says the first church service begins.

Believers go to the church and stay as long as they desire. The church is quiet and softly lit with just the usual lots of statues and candles. One prays and meditates, contemplates and conjugates, reflects and genuflects.  There is no service.  Just me and God.

As I said, it has been a long time since I went to a formal Easter vigil.  I do not know if Wi-Fi and ESPN-To-Go is available, but I think maybe with a new pizza eating pope and the Notre Dame women in the Final Four, it is entirely possible you can take your device for the Easter Vigil now.

But just because “I don’t go to church and I don’t cut my hair,” (Buffet, Jimmy – Pencil-Thin-Mustache) doesn’t mean I do not have a vigil.  I agree with Amy Farrah Fowler from the Big Bang Theory. “I don’t question the existence of a Deity, but I wonder about one that takes attendance on Sunday.”

Me and God have already had this talk, but I will share a few points with you.

Two years ago, I asked God to “make me a writer.” He answered my request with a “Here is some butt glue. Keep your butt in the chair and develop the talents I gave you, learn some new ones and trust the process.” Side bar: Please note that butt glue should not be confused with a product called Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. While similar sounding, one is a figure of speech and the other is a product found near the diaper rash products in the grocery store.

For my Ash Wednesday commitment in 2014, I said “During the Forty days of the Lenten season, I will write something every day, Monday through Friday.” I decided to share the writings on a blog I called Here’s What I’m Thinking.  My goals were to make a reader smile and think.

The link was shared with a chosen few. Some read it; some did not. First thing I learned was that Lent is not truly 40 calendar days.  But before I knew it, it was Easter Sunday, 2014 and I had to decide to continue or stop.

I trusted the process and decided to enlarge the circle of readers. Some began to read it daily.  People began to send texts and emails with “that was funny” or “I liked today.” Here is a special shout out to Cecil M. who would call laughing his petunia off over something I had written. I hope you are still laughing. Your laugher is so much encouragement. Much love and thank you for the many ideas!

To RL, KMY, KQ, Judy D, Kathy K. and others – especially my dear, sweet sister who made comments and shared the blog with others. All of you are God sent folks of encouragements. Bless you and a big thank you to all of you for reading, laughing and believing. Please know that your names have moved to a very prominent place of Acknowledgements when the book is published.  Those of you who did not read and are not reading, well, you are probably in the book somewhere. You are definitely in the blog somewhere.

Next thing I knew I was in a new place and Here’s What I’m Thinking began to take on a structure. College Sports, The Texas Aggies, Texas Education, and the ever-snarky, Texas Politics.

I called it Here’s What I’m Thinking. It is not necessarily what I believe in. If I wanted you to know what I believe in, I would have called it Here’s What I Believe In. It is supposed to make you smile, hopefully laugh and make you think.

The New Year arrived and soon it was time to think about Ash Wednesday, 2015.   It was time to stay small or go big. I had this thought “you have a doctorate in the design of learning environments, design one for yourself.” Wonder where that thought came from?

As with all projects or businesses there must be a plan.  I set forth into the dangerous world of social media with the following plan of action:

“If I know you, have known you, have just met you or will meet you in the future, I WILL write about you.  There is a statistical probability within one standard deviation that what I write about you will be positive. Are you willing to take the chance it is not, and not read Here’s What I’m Thinking?”

I learned Twitter – thank you KMY, BTA and Angela S for being test subjects.

I redesigned and upgraded the Here’s What I’m Thinking site. Thank you other bloggers for such good ideas and suggestions. Especially to Awkward Mamma Adventures for making me laugh -https://mammaflybox.wordpress.com/

I linked HWIT to Twitter. People retweeted it.

I studied Facebook. Thank you Nat and BJ.

On March 1, 2015, I prayed “Oh God, please project my identity” and joined Facebook and linked Here’s What I’m Thinking.

This brings us to today, the Saturday Easter Vigil. All projects must be evaluated. In forty (40) days readership went from about 30 followers to about 160 followers – using government and John Wax math.  Forty days. Interesting number, huh?

So draw your own conclusions. Were my prayers answers? Does what I write make you smile? Does it make you think, even though you may disagree? Did I do it alone or have Divine Intervention? Spiritual journeys are interesting, aren’t they?

Happy Easter.

PS – If my Great Nieces and Great Nephews (GNs) do not get on FB and start giving me some LIKES, you are out of the will.

Friday, April 3, 2015 – Snarky Friday – Assessment

Friday, April 3, 2015 – Snarky Friday – Assessment

To select this Friday’s snark about, I imagined the following as giant piñatas and I was beating the crap out of them – the state of Indiana, Ted Cruz or Assessment in Texas schools. The one with the most candy today was Assessment in Texas schools.

Last week was STAAR Testing in the Texas public school system. Assessement. Testing. What have you learned? How do we know? Can a test show what you know?

So this week’s Friday question to the Texas Legislature as always is – “What have you done for the people of Texas this week? Here is a list, including, but not limited to:

  • Increased anxiety levels among all school aged children
  • Increased anxiety levels among all parents and guardians of school aged children
  • Increased anxiety levels among all teachers and instructional assistants
  • Increased anxiety levels among all campus and district level administrators
  • Decreased instructional time in the classroom
  • Ineffectively utilized teachers and administrators throughout the educational system
  • Increased corporate earnings for Big P and others profiting off the children and the educational institution under the heading of “Assessment.”

After Captain Hairspray decided to take millions away from the boys and girls of Texas schools by closing The Form Factory where I was working, and put them toward your toll roads, I was unemployed. I was fortunate to secure a job in a nearby school district in a central office job to complete my educational career. On the educational side (not the business side) everyone at this level was Master’s Degree and higher.  There were about 25 of us.

During assessment week, or Academic Lockdown, as I like to call it, every one of us was out of our offices and on campuses. My job was to ride around the district visiting my four assigned campuses. I was a Bathroom Nazi.  My job was to go to a campus and give one of the people assigned to guard the bathroom a 15 minute break and/or a 30 minute lunch break. I would sit in front of the bathroom, with no book to read, no phone to look at or no music to listen to because these and about a hundred other items are forbidden in the testing rules. I was happy to have a chair to sit in.

My job was to ensure only one student entered at a time and only stayed a reasonably allotted time.  When the campus bathroom Nazi returned, I would leave and drive to another campus and do the same routine. I did this for four days.

These are your tax dollars at work.  And this model is carried out throughout the state in over the 1000+ by God Independent School Districts.

And if you think that is scary, guess what I did while unemployed?  I scored assessment tests. As they say in show business – You ain’t heard nothing yet!

Oh yes – the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is a good place to share your thoughts regarding assessment, but please do not place blame this mess on the agency.  As all state agencies are required, it is just following the laws set forth by the Texas Legislatures.  So if you desire change contact your representatives.

Maybe a new state education slogan could be: Texas Education: Where Every Child is Assessed!

God Bless Texas and God Bless Texas Education. Feel free to substitute your own belief structure.

April Fool! It is Wednesday, April 1, 2015.

If it is Wednesday, then that means golf. So today’s entry chronicling the Sweet Potato Queen Zippity Do Dah Parade will be late.

I shot 4 under par last week.  Remember, it is April Fool’s Day.

Tuesday, March 31, 2015 – Post Big A** Hat Contest

Tuesday, March 31, 2015 – Post Big A** Hat Contest

Two Thetas and an Alpha Chi Omega meet up in Jackson, Mississippi for lunch on Friday, March 27, 2015. But first,

Holly W., and Kim M., you both had my heart, but my bracket had Maryland and Notre Dame. My women’s final four predictions were correct. And here’s to the Dayton Flyers for giving UConn a gut check.  It was so worth it to see Geno’s face and fumbling for words at half time when you were leading.  Go Flyers!

Now onward through the sequins and the glitter.

We did not win the prize for the best Big A** Hat at Sal and Mookey’s (correct spelling this time). However, The Little Bay Sea Queens from Rockport-Fulton, Texas, making their first trip to the SPQ Zippity Do Dah Parade took home the trophy.  There is nothing like a beauty queen from Texas and no man can resist that many at one time. The judge drowned in their beauty.  So congrats to The Little Bay Sea Queens for making all Texas Sweet Potato Queens proud.

Prior to the evening festivities we decided we were in definite need of a refreshing nap.  It could have needed due to being on the road at 6:15 AM that morning to reach Jackson in time for the Big A** Hat Luncheon. Note to Baylor Thetas Alums – I swear N1 was up and ready with the bling a blanging at that hour.  Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot it is Baylor and you don’t swear.  I promise N1 was up at that hour.

However, the need for a nap could have been the bloody Mary that followed the lemon tini.  I thought the Thetas ordered lemon tea, being from Baylor and all, so I said the same for me.  What a pleasant surprise arrived at the table and I think it is illegal in Mississippi to waste alcohol.

Nevertheless, a nap was in order.  But prior to our nap, we decided to take a quick visit to the SPQ store back at The Hilton. It was there we met some lovely people and learned several essential factoids about your first parade. You are a virgin and a SPQ Wannabe. One should note this by holding two fingers like the V for Victory or the peace sign in every picture.  This avoids confusion in subsequent years.  And as they say, whoever “They is,” You always remember your first. This also allows you to meet up with other virgin queen wannabes to compare notes.

Then we learned one must choose a queenly name. I immediately thought of the second song from the musical Cats.

“The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,

It isn’t just one of your holiday games;

You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter

When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.”

Names that never belong to more than one cat.

But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,

And that is the name that you never will guess;

The name that no human research can discover –

But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess. ―

T.S. Eliot, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats  and Cats

And suddenly I was transformed into Sweet Potato Queen Wannabe Leslie Gore Tex.

After our refreshing nap and a glass of champagne, we all prepared for the evening event – The “Pearls and PJ’s and Pelo Grande – Oversized Hair dos – as always, Size Does Matter!”

Given that I live in the shadow of the George H. W. Bush Library, the pearls I chose for this event were my Barbara Bush look alike pearls from The Dollar Store.  My pjs were my only one shade of gray sweat pants, designed by Nike – the ones that make my butt look good. Thank you, KQ! The evening ensemble was complimented by a faded, maroon, long-sleeved Texas A&M T-shirt from the Junior League garage sale last weekend.

Chris Gill & the Sole Shakers! – “You know I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble.”  Once again thank you, KQ. I looked so good shaking it because it all stayed in one place. And when it was shaking there wasn’t a whole lot of shaking going on all over the place like Jell-O. “I got that boom boom that all the boys chase. All the right junk in all the right places.”

Leslie Gore Tex and The Twins – Do tell! I do not know which one of you Tarleton twins is the most handsome!

Pajamas & Pearls Twins (800x600)

Well, that seems to be all of the pictures I have from the dance. Until the other pictures come in, I shall deny everything else.  I do hope the professional photographer captured me and woman doing the full blown Tina Turner dance, including head shakes to Rolling on the River. Thanks again, KQ for those strong legs.

As we were leaving, we caught a couple of The Fifty-Shades of Hay Queens. Wouldn’t Martha Jean’s Fifty Shades of Grey Goose hat look fabulous with these ensembles?

Fifty Shades of Hay (599x800)

We were keenly disappointed to learn from them that we had missed the award winning Little Bay Sea Queens from Rockport-Fulton, Texas doing a fully choreographed number to Abba’s Dancing Queen in the karaoke room.

But it was time to hit the hay because Saturday was the Zippity Do Dah Parade.  So until tomorrow.

Monday, March 30, 2015 – The Sweet Potato Queen Bathrobe Brunch

Monday, March 30, 2015 – The Sweet Potato Queen Bathrobe Brunch

Before we continue with our Sweet Potato Queen (SPQ) trip, please join me as my friend, RL and I share a brief moment of thought regarding the women’s NCAA Tournament – “Notre Dame Sucks.” And now back to the story of our SPQ weekend.

Yesterday was Palm Sunday and it was the Bathrobe Brunch. I think that was about the best Palm Sunday service I have been to in my entire 66 years.  Number one, you could wear your bathrobe and number two there was food that would bring the Methodists and Presbyterians to tears it was so good.  And number three, you could eat while the service was going on.

Bathobe Brunch

I had always believed that God has a sense of humor.  I mean, really. Look around your neighborhood.  Heck, look around your family. But now I know He does and He sent it down in the form of Jill Conner Browne (JCB) to share it with all of us.

But first there was music. I always liked the music part of the services. Lord, and I mean that literally, thank you for sending this man and his voice not only to us, but to the world.

Music

When he opened his mouth and songs of praise flew out, that room filled with about a million angels and butterflies all flying around and into your heart. Can I have a Halleluiah! Amen and a Praise It Up!

Of course, it can’t be a churchy kind a thing unless there is an announcement or two. “The Sweet Potato Queen musical will premier in Houston, Texas next March at the Theatre under the Stars.  Dates have not been set. Melissa Etheridge wrote the music…” I quit listening after that because I was blocking out the entire month of March 2016 on my smart phone calendar app to save the date.

JCB

Then it was time for the sermon or the talking part.  This was great too because it was short. JCB talked about things like loving and sharing, and giving and helping and all those kind of things you should have learned at home when you were growing up.  If you didn’t, your Mama didn’t raise you right.  But you got a second chance to learn it from the Bible and believing and having faith.

Then she and Randall Wallace, (Zippity Do Dah Parade Marshall and author of Braveheart – yes, that would be the Academy Award winning one, with Mel Gibson) talked about being brave, having heart and treasuring freedom.

Wallace & Browne

It takes courage to make that triad in your life. By this time, everybody is crying with tears of joy, love and happiness. And most of all for the money raised for Baston Children’s Hospital in hopes of providing things sometimes as simple as a  van large enough to allow all of the permanent residents of the hospital to travel at the same time to a park to experience the freedom of being outside on a beautiful day. It is all for the chirren.

Then it was time for the benediction. Now this is where I know and believe that God has not only the greatest power, but also the greatest sense of humor. Remember, these are the Sweet Potato Queens and there are hundreds of us in the ballroom. Queens from all over the United States united in our Sweet Potato Queenships.

Then Jill Conner Browne says “Now let’s stand and sing Never Wear Panties to a Party if you want have real good time.*
