Please do not confuse my many alter egos with my multiple personalities.

This week and each day this week, there is a special birthday memory from me to you.

Re: Birthdays: January 10 and 13, 2016

Attn: Needed by COB or on State Standard Time

Happy Birthday, Dear Friend. I still do not understand why we could not get our state agency ID cards with one photo of both of us in the same frame. Separate ID cards, but with one photo with the two of us would have saved the state money and tax payers too. But that was too logical. It wasn’t like people could not tell us apart – especially during your beard years. But it was still fun to argue with the people responsible for the state ID cards – renewal the week of your birthday.

Monday – January 11 – Anybody born today who is saying Roll Tide.

Tuesday – January 12 – Happy Birthday to my favorite sister, Dale Marie. Love you. Have fun in Padre. It might be a bit chilly for your string bikini. I would go with the indoors, a fire and a good book. Love this photo of you and your Cabbage Patch doll. OMG – that is me! And you are about to drop me! Well, that explains a lot doesn’t it?  “I am not crazy. My mother had me tested.” (Dr. Sheldon Cooper)

Tuesday, January 12 – Happy Birthday my childhood gone too soon friend Molly Harper Fowler

Delia Duffey and Molly Harper – their 13th birthday party @ Magnolia Community Center

and then …

Wednesday, January 13 – To ME! And to two of the dearest friends a person could have been blessed with in their life and that I am blessed to share the anniversary of our births. Carolyn Sue and Nova T. What is even better is that they are both older than I am! LMAO!

Sidebar: Carolyn Sue – Is it true that you and one of your friends ran past security back stage at a concert chasing Kris Kristofferson only to run into his then wife, Rita Coolidge and her security? It’s a wonder we, I mean you and your friend, were not arrested.

Sidebar: Nova – I promise I will ask the next person who comes through the door at the bar to dance, BEFORE the song ends, but they must have a full set of teeth, or at least all of the front ones on the top and the bottom.

Wednesday, January 14 – Larry Martinez – Memory from Mrs. Mock’s 5th Grade Class, Magnolia Elementary School – On the first day of each month students with birthdays that month went to the blackboard (that is what it was called then) and wrote the dates of their birthday. Molly, Larry and I were the January birthdays.

Thursday, January 15 – Lloyd Bridges, father of Jeff and Beau and stared in Airplane and the 1960’s TV series Sea Hunt. I really did not nor do not have any memories of Lloyd Bridges, or his sons but I did watch Sea Hunt as a child and saw the movie Airplane.

Friday, January 16 – George Edward Pickett, Brigadier General, Confederate States of America. Led a charge during the Battle of Gettysburg. It really did not turn out too well. I did not know him either, but I did read the book Killer Angels about The Battle of Gettysburg and the infamous charge, historically known as Pickett’s Charge. Plus – it is Snarky Friday. Life lessons: Do not always charge down the middle dividing your forces into two parts. Nevertheless, live life as though you are leading a cavalry charge!

Anyway, if it is your birthday today, then I hope it is happy and Roll Tide.

Friday, January 8, 2016 – Whole Lotta Shaking Going On! Happy Birthday to The Oracle of The Elvi

Friday, January 8, 2016 – Whole Lotta Shaking Going On! Happy Birthday to The Oracle of The Elvi

“Warden threw a party in the county jail; the prison band was there and it began to wail; the band was jumpin’ and the joint began to swing. You should’ve heard those knocked out jailbirds sing. Let’s rock, everybody, let’s rock.”

That’s alright, Mama, but there is a whole lotta shaking going on at the jailhouse rock because you ain’t nothing but a hound dog in a heartbreak hotel, in the ghetto, with a hunka hunka burning love, where wise men say only fools rush in, because I can’t stop falling in love with you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to The Elvi – Elvis Aaron Presley

Born January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

How many Elvis songs can you get into one sentence?

From what movie is Can’t Help Falling in Love with You? And the extra bonus question – What was the name of the movie theatre in Tomball, Texas where Madam Rose saw the movie?

How many know that Elvis gave a concert in Conroe, Texas? It was in the old Conroe High School stadium – the campus then became Travis Jr. High – and today the building and grounds are something else in CISD. You must be really old, like my sister whose birthday is next week, to remember stuff like this. Most everybody from Conroe in that age bracket swears they saw Elvis in the Conroe High Stadium in the 1950’s. Some will even swear they had an ice cream cone with Elvis at the Dairy Queen on South Frazier after the concert.

So celebrate the Inner Elvis in all of us today and LET’S ROCK!

Janne, is it a state holiday in Mississippi?

Answers: Blue Hawaii. Winona Theatre – Main Street, Tomball, Texas

“Thank you! Thank you very much! I believe I will go have me a “peanut butter and nanner samwich.”

2015 in review

Tuesday, January 5, 2016 – I Would Like to Thank the Members of the Academy, my high school English teachers and you.

I am going to a meeting today so read this instead. Remember the goal of Here’s What I’m Thinking is to make at least one person smile/laugh and/or think every day.

Here is the Annual Report from the crunchy number people at WordPress about Here’s What I’m Thinking. Thank you again. Please continue to read and follow in 2016.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,500 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Tuesday, December 29, 2015 – The Days of 2015 Dwindle –Some Baby Boomer Songs for Looking Back

We are “Talking ‘Bout My Generation.” The Who. Google it.

“When I was seventeen, it was a very good year …” Really? Name one seventeen year who thinks she or he is having a very good year. But hearing Frank Sinatra sing the opening line still takes your breath away.

Ahh – For all my dear and wonderful friends with love and sweet memories. Sing along.

Those Were the Days by Mary Hopkin

Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours, And dreamed of all the great things we would do…

Those were the days my friend We thought they’d never end We’d sing and dance forever and a day We’d live the life we choose We’d fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la…

Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I’d see you in the tavern We’d smile at one another and we’d say

Those were the days my friend We thought they’d never end We’d sing and dance forever and a day We’d live the life we choose We’d fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way.

Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be In the glass I saw a strange reflection Was that lonely woman really me?

Through the door there came familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name Oh my friend we’re older but no wiser For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days my friend We thought they’d never end We’d sing and dance forever and a day We’d live the life we choose We’d fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la… Those were the days, oh yes those were the days.

To hell with the lyrics. THESE are the days, my friend. We are older and whole lot wiser. And WE DID IT! We did do great things. We are still doing great things. We lived the lives we chose; we did not lose, we are still fighting for our causes, we are still singing and dancing; and we are certainly sure to have our way now!

Boomers! “Come Together, right now, over me!” Screaming then.

I am off to start my Christmas celebrations with family, friends and loved ones.

So there will be no Here’s What I’m Thinking until Monday, December 28. So until then here are some holiday photos of me festooned. It means to adorn with; or as with festoons or decorations.

Here I am – rock and a round the Christmas tree.

Friday, December 11, 2015 – A Pencil Thin Mustache and Family Photos.

Dear Santa,

I promise not to be snarky on Friday until after Christmas. Please take that into consideration, because you know it is hard for me. Thank you. Love, D.

Christmas – and that’s what I’m calling it and if you do not like it, then stop reading. But Christmas Day is two weeks from today. Families will gather in love and celebrate The Reason for Season. But it is also a time of great fun. So Here’s What I’m Thinking.

What to wear? I am thinking that the Christmas T-shirt with the reindeer balls is not going to over well at midnight mass. I am not really seeing me wearing it to candle light at the Presbyterian either. Perhaps I should wear the one with the wine glasses. I should probably not plan on the LED, light-up necklace this year. Last year it kinda gave the image of the Star in the East blinking on and off.

I hope this is the year we have the big, lighted display in the front yard that reads “Remember, to the outside world, we look like a normal family.” It will explain a lot about a couple of memorable family photos from Our Family Christmas 2013.

This family portrait is my favorite sibling, Niece #2 and my great nieces and nephews and me. I call it “I wish I had a pencil-thin mustache” after the great 20th Century philosopher, Jimmy Buffet. However, the song that comes to mind, is “They’re creepy and they’re kooky, they’re altogether spooky – The Addams Family.” CLICK CLICK. But obviously you can see the genetic tendencies of who carries which gene for which color mustache.

Christmas 2013 2013-12-24 068 (800x530)

This family portrait is of my nephews preparing for a red hot competition of reindeer ring toss. I call it “Here. Hold my Beer” by the philosopher Bud Wiser Lite. I am glad this year they decided to use plastic rings instead of those cast iron horse shoes they used the year before.

Christmas 2013 2013-12-24 073 (800x530)

Yes, Christmas is a time for sharing. I hope this is getting you into the Christmas spirit. And don’t forget, ya’ll, we are the high end of both the family gene pool and Montgomery County.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015 – Pretty Prism

Please excuse DrDrD from Here’s What I’m Thinking today. Instead look at the pretty prism that hit my living floor yesterday. Pretty cool, huh?

Tuesday, December 8, 2015 – One Reason the World is the Way It Is Today.

Tuesday, December 8, 2015 – One Reason the World is the Way It Is Today.

Here’s What I’m Thinking – “Yesterday, December 7, a date that will live in infamy, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attacked Guam. The Japanese attacked Wake Island …” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Address to Congress, December 8, 1941.

If you were in MY (or Ms. Navasota’s) history class at McCullough High School in the late 1970’s and you did not know what yesterday was, we WILL change your grades! And you should be ashamed.

Yesterday I was a judge at a history fair at a local high school. The first presentation was entitled “Nazi POW Camps in Texas.” Before the students began I asked “Do you know what today is?” When they looked clueless, I said “Perhaps had there not been a today 71 years ago, you would not have had a presentation on this topic today.” Still clueless.

The ramifications of the Pearl Harbor attack shaped the world in which we grew up and live today. Americans would think “it will never happen again and the United States will never be attacked from the outside by an enemy” until it did happen again on September 11, 2001.

To understand the world today, it is necessary to understand how and why and what events took place to get us to where we are. Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it and in many cases, erroneous in their views of the world today as a result.

So once again, here’s to The Greatest Generation and to those generations who followed and succeeded because of them. Thank you.JV waving from bus (800x530)DSC_0096 (800x530)DSC_0092 (800x530)

Monday, December 7, 2015 – The Monday After Saturday College Football Awards and little more.

Monday, December 7, 2015 – The Monday After Saturday College Football Awards and little more.

Please refer to last Monday’s HWIT to see that I selected the top four, including Michigan State for the National Championship. Please note that does not infer or reflect any support for the Spartans. I just like green over black and gold.

Just to ensure there is no mistakes or misunderstandings, I am going with Alabama and Rolling with the Tide. Note to Big 12 conference: Are you working on a Championship Game? Just asking.

There are not many awards today. Remember, this is only about teams I care about and teams that play teams I care about.

To Baylor – if there ever was a need for a 12th Man, you showed it this year. Since Texas A&M holds the rights to that phrase, perhaps you could use “Fifth (maybe Sixth) Quarterback.” Baylor wins the Hard knocks Award.

To their opponent THE University – you win The Way to Show Your Burnt Orange Ass Award. It was very impressive how your entire team gathered around the injured Baylor quarterback and kicked dust in his face. Let me also award you “The Best Start of a College Football Brawl.” This was only enhanced when you taunted the Baylor fans with the money signal. You should be so proud of yourself winning against a team that was down to their fourth quarterback with no experience. What bowl game are you playing in, TU? Hook ‘Em Hippies!

There will be more on the 40 Bowl games later, but right now – The Aggies are going to Nashville to meet Louisville in the Music City Bowl. Let me find my guitar and start practicing War Hymn. Whoop.

Hotty Toddy Ole Miss and Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. How fun will that be?

But today is December 7 – a date that will live in infamy. That Sunday at 7:55 AM on December 7, 1941, Hickam Field in Hawaii was attacked by the Japanese causing the United States to enter World War II. This event and those following would bring us The Greatest Generation of men and women who changed the world ensuring our freedom. Honor them today and every day, along with every other veteran.
