Wednesday, February 14, 2018 – Friends, Romans, Kneelers Lent Me Your Ears.

Today is Ash Wednesday marking the first day of the season of Lent. What does it mean? I am so glad you ashed.

Lent (Latin: Quadragesima: Fortieth) is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial. This event is observed in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, and Catholic Churches.

Some Anabaptist and evangelical churches also observe the Lenten season. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning on Palm Sunday, further climaxing on Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Many mark this day by receiving ashes in the form of the cross on their forehead from a priest or minister. Believers make a commitment to sacrifice and avoid the “lead us not into temptation” thing. Some give up something such as smoking, drinking, gum, or candy. Others, like me, try to do something positive to make a difference.

In fact, Here’s What I’m Thinking was started as a Lenten commitment about five years ago. The purpose was to make someone laugh and/or think on a daily basis.

During Lent, I do not eat meat on Fridays. This is much harder than you think. Think Bubba Gump shrimp each and every Friday. I usually blow it toward the end of the season when a cheeseburger inadvertently goes into my mouth. WE shall see this year.

Today is also St. Valentine’s Day.

Here’s wishing you, peace, love and Sam Cooke.

Thursday, February 08, 2018 – Three Wishes and Social Psychology 101

I was asked the other day if a genie appeared and granted me three wishes, what would I wish for.

This type of question is usually reserved for late nights sitting around with friends and all are filled with liquid grape philosophy. This type question should not be asked when you are trying to do your last set of inch worms on the gym floor while your trainer just stands around watching you. At that moment your only wish is not to die or the floor of Gold’s gym.

After a few chardonnay grapes last night I realized my three wishes would be based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation” in Psychological Review.

Maslow proposed five levels in a pyramid graphic.

A better representation of the five levels is the dynamic showing the interaction of the levels and the ebb and flow of the elements.

My three wishes would be to have the first three levels and all of the items in the level. The fourth level of Esteem and the Fifth Level of Self Actualization, I can obtain if I have the first three.

  1. Biological and physiological – air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex and sleep.
  2. Safety – protection from elements, security, order, law, stability, freedom from fear.
  3. Love and belongingness – friendship, intimacy, trust and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love. Affiliating and being part of a group, (family, friends, and work.)

I love smart people who make me think – even when they are making me do inch worms.

Wednesday, February 07, 2018 – Parading Onward Through the Fog

It was so foggy here yesterday I was unable to find the keyboard.

Thought for the day. Sometimes in a parade when you are in the front of a large number of people coming up behind you, they are chasing you.

While most think of the quote “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away” is attributed to General Douglas MacArthur, it is actually from a song. It is posted at the end.

Mr. J.V., it was my honor to escort you to see your monument on the first Honor Flight out of Austin, Texas in 2012. Thank you for being part of The Greatest Generation that helped make the world free.

HWIT, Old soldiers never die: they just fade away and into peaceful rest.” But the memories last a lifetime. J, V., Doc, and Ray – The Boys from Luling, Texas are all gone now. Here’s to The Greatest Generation and to every military person today who keeps us safe. And Here’s to you, J.V.
